OK, shouldn't have a pinned barrel, someone changed the hammer.

...but should a no-dash 60 have prefix AHJ? I was thinking just "R" if any letter prefix.

I'm with 'ya and that is the quandary. An "AHJ" prefix on a no-dash, Mod60 isn't lining up.

So I'm trying to figure out how this is cobbled together then as again, there is no dash, no pin and no "R" prefix. Now, I'm just plain curious.

Somebody must have misplaced the dash at the S&W factory.

I have 2 non pinned , no dash Model 60s.

A lot of the dash numbers on the model 60 were variations of the little guns. Not necessarily engineering changes. The hammer did not come on the gun. The rest may be correct. I don’t think they changed the dash number when they eliminated the pinned barrel on Model 60s.

The pinned barrel seems to have been eliminated in 1982 after 60-1 which, to your point, reflected a variation as opposed to an engineering change.

Default looks righteous except hammer to me

Op's Model 60 no dash fits all the blocks except color case hardened hammer.

My Model 60 no dash was sold some years ago to another Forum Member, but note the pics, s/n AES prefix, no bbl pin, hammer and trigger original.

Per SCSW 4th, and my other research at the time of acquisition, the Model 60 had serial no. prefix of "R" from 1969 to 1983. In 1983 the triple alpha prefix started. Mine was manufactured in 1984 and was a true "no dash"...

I think the OP's is righteous, and I'm not even sure his hammer is not correct...who knows, S&W is famous for using up inventory parts and maybe that one slid through with a case hardened hammer.

I've seen the pics of the 60 in question:
Clearly not pinned.
Clearly not dashed.
Clearly starts with AHJ prefix

As stated previously :

The model 60 "no dash" was produced from 1965 to 1988, which spanned six-digit numbers with no prefix, the whole R prefix run (during which the pinned barrel was deleted), and well into the three-letter prefix SNs. AHJ is likely from 1985.

Agree the OP's gun in question may have just used NOS parts.

Not at all true.

Model 60-1 3" square butt parts were built in 1972 and 171 of those were assembled and shipped in 1978. Pinned barrel.

Model 60-1 2" Target was a one-time release of 660 to Ashland Shooters Supply in 1985. Not a pinned barrel.

Model 60-2 was a NYPD special order that might have gone through several iterations after the NYPD rejected most of them.

The pinned barrel ceased in 1982.

The 60-3 didn't appear till 1988.

The only quandary here is the case hardened hammer, which any Bubba could have changed.

Default Found my old Model 60 no dash LOA

Maybe this post can help clear up some confusion on the OP's gun. Of course we still need pics!

I had a Model 60 no dash that had been engraved by Ben Shostle, Founder of Firearms Engravers Guild of America (FEGA) and it was a "R" prefix s/n that I sent for an LOA. It shipped June 9, 1981.

Check out the LOA that I'm posting as it will help clear up some of the posts about R or triple alpha...as you can see April 1983 was a cut-off date so there sure could be transitions during that year. Also the Jovino ones are noted as being mixed throughout the triple alpha numbering system.

If the OP would post up some pics maybe we could help more. Other than that one would need to send for a Letter to prove what's what when it left the factory.

I have a model 60 with no dash and a AYN prefix. I guess it was stamped wrong at the factory.

The 2" Model 60 was a no dash up to 1988, when it went to -3. The -1 were 3". I have both pinned and unpinned Rs and a triple alpha no dash. Other than the hammer it seems right.

This has been one of the most informative threads I've read in some time. Forced me to dive back in to the SCSW and also made me get my pinned Model 60 no dash with an R serial number out of the safe for the first time in years. Great discussion . . .

The model 60 can get confusing as well as the mode 36. I have an unpinned no dash 36.

Very much agree! The 3rd edition is marginally vague on this one. Glad to have kicked this off with the stimulus from Mike. I guess at this point we can't even say for sure and/or certain that the hammer isn't original to it.

Your Model 60 was not stamped wrong.

The Spec Ord number on your box, "7320" is the Julian date, and many believe that means the day your Model 60 was packaged and ready to be shipped.

In your Model 60's case, that date was 1987, November 16th.

The Model 60 was made through 1988. The Model 60-3 replaced the Model 60 at some point in 1988.

There wasn't a 60-1 or 60-2?

I wasn't sure if the code was for 87 or 97.

Thanks!
