Default 640-1 Logo Differences

Ok ladies & Gentlemen I have a few questions regarding a second 640-1 that I recently adopted.

The first one I have had for many years and love it so when the opportunity to pick up another came along I jumped at it and noticed from the get-go that their are a few small differences in the logos and font that was used to stamp the barrels and was curious if anyone here had a short quick answer.

Notice the large on logo on the bottom and small logo on the top 640?

Extra credit question, why was different font used for the barrel stamping?

And just for the fun of it I did a family photo....

Thank you in advance and please be safe out there

You made me take a second look at mine. Looks like I have the bigger logo on mine. Curious to hear what others have to say. I believe my 640-1 was produced in 1996 if that makes a difference.

The 2 Centerfire (1's forged CBBxxx, 1's MIM) 640-1 I have both have the large stamp. I have a third, but I'm too lazy to pull it out of the safe to look.

Noticed on yours, that the logo seems to track the thumbpiece, CaliTrav's has the old style thumbpiece and large logo, mine have the new thumbpiece and the large logo, oh well, S&W.

Below is a link to an article on roll stamping, which is interesting, and a quick read:

When did they change to MIM parts?

My 640-1 was an early one shipped April 1995.

Btw, really liking the looks of the grips you guys have. Looks like zombie66 has the vz grips and Jimmyjones has the Altamont grips. I have the big hogue grips on mine and find it is too big for conceal carry and prints. Looking for better grips that conceal better but still feels good to shoot. Any recommendations? I have read uncle mike's were awesome if you can find them since they are no longer made. Pachmayr grips were great but quality and fit are **** now. I know what works for some don't work for others but trying to get feedback to help me with a decision. Not trying to have a drawer full of expensive grips like the stack of holsters lol.

I have a set of Atamonts on the M38 and the ****** thong about those are the back of the grips are NOT rounded towards the back strap of the frame so their is a little bit of a “ridge” and it is not super comfortable.

Also I have the Hogue Extreme G10 grips and I love them, they are meant to be sanded down to get the desired grip you like, I dont really care for the VZ’s.

I hope this helps.

I was sure the larger logo was for us Seniors, whose eyesight is not what it used to be. I am glad that my logo is LARGE. ;-)

The Altamont round BATELEUR Super Rosewood Checkered that I have on my 640-1 is very smooth on the back of the grips, and there is only a very tight-fitting seam. No uncomfortable ridge. Maybe check back with Altamont.

Best handles for the 640-1 are by Craig Spegel ... but finding them these days is a real quest.

rubiranch, that combo looks very nice. who makes that holster?

And, you guys are killing me with these dash 1 models. I have a dash 2 & 3 but need an early model apparently. Now, if I could only get rid of that stupid IL on my 3, I would be set.

Keep these pics coming...

Galco, E179 V118

I bought a NIB 60-14 Lady Smith from a good friend a couple of
years ago and it came with everything pictured here.

I've never fired the Lady Smith.

For whoever is counting, mine came from Centerfire. CAF4925, large logo, old style thumbpiece. I don't know when it was made, but I am guessing around 1996.

I was recently reunited with my 640-1 after it had been in storage for five years. It's an early one, BUD63XX. I think 1995 or 1996. Large logo. Don't have the SCSW with me here. Maybe someone will confirm DOB?

I bought it around 2008 or 2009, and had Grant Cunningham tune it for me. It has a very, very smooth trigger pull.

I like the grips a lot. Herrett's Jordon Troopers, custom fit to my hand, figured walnut with fine line checkering.

Note how the grips cover the back strap and go high up the frame. In addition to being beautiful, very comfortable to shoot. I think being able to hold the gun comfortably high up on the frame makes a difference in perceived recoil.

I've been EDCing a Colt DS, but carried this one today.

How about no logo? And these (locally made!) grips are ugly, but they sure can cook!
