J Frame Grip Recommendations
Figured I would ask the experts here for some advice. I am not even sure if what I am looking for is even made. I have been trying to find a set of rubber grips that cover the backstrap on Jframe RB's that doesn't add length to the grip. Looked at the Pach compacts but they seem bulky. Hogue with the screw adapters are to long for my tastes. Any other options out there? Thanks.

Right after I saw your post, the next thread I opened was a for sale post for a 442 with 9mm conversion, by a member named slabside2. The grips on his gun appear to be what you're looking for. You might want to look at his photos, then contact him. Hope that helps.
I have the Hogue tamers. Love the way they mitigate recoil, but don't have them on the gun right now because I prefer wood boot grips for concealment. The tamers are longer.
Good luck.

My 649-2 has a set of Crimson Trace lasers which cover the back strap and add no length. These are very comfortable and have the benefit of laser sighting.

What about the reviews that say the new ones have major fit and finish issues. I been searching ebay to try and find a old pair of the originals. I just went with the hogue bantam for better conceal carry than the larger hogue grips that were on there but it has the open backstrap.

This is an old and grainy photo of a bunch of 640-1's with a nice variety of grips/stocks. From left to right: Uncle Mikes extended grip, a pair of early 640-1's with Uncle Mike's Boot Grips, Eagle Secret Service checkered, and Hogue Bantam grips. Right now my EDC 640-1 wears a set of Craig Spegel walnut boot grips, and the 13-2 wears Pachmayr Compac full coverage grips. Very grippy.

I also have a 640-1 and still trying to find a grip that conceals well and one that you can still shoot 357's without it causing pain. Do any of those grips conceal well and still work well with recoil? I just put a set of the hogue bantams on but with the exposed back strap I am not looking forward to shooting 357's out of it. Thanks and very nice collection you have there.
After looking at how shiny yours are I will need to do a couple more rounds of polish on mine. Lol

Sammy, not the prettiest option but Ive seen people trim the bottom off of j frame Pachmayr Gripper grips turning them into backstrap covered boot grips.

I had some wood grips on my 36 that was really uncomfortable shooting any 38 +P rounds. The boney base of the thumb on the palm took a beating. I put on the Hogue rubber grips, and even though the back strap is uncovered, the base of the thumb is protected by the rubber. It made huge difference, and the fit is perfect.

Thanks!! I just put these smaller hogue grips on with exposed back strap. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet with 357's. I will give it a try before looking further. Thanks again!!

That may be where I end up. I wish i could find a boot grip similar to what is on the Ruger LCR.

LOL, I have the exact same revolver in 38. the grips dont cover the backstrap. They are the best for concealing i have found so far though. Thanks

Looked at the Crimson trace grips a few times. Grip is what i am looking for but not sure if i am ready to take that plunge or want the laser.
Thought about buying a new pair of compacts (pachs) and trimming them down. I have a couple sets of older compacts but dont want to ruin them. I hear the new ones are not as nice.

Most rubber grips will add a bit of weight (if that’s a concern) and trap moisture between the grip & frame, causing rust. I use the Pachs w/my Js for extended range sessions (100 + rounds) but wood for carry.

These are from Altamont. Best small frame grips I’ve ever used.

It’s a matter of math and geometry. You can’t cover the back of the grip strap without increasing the distance to the back of the grip by the thickness of whatever covering you add. The only other option would be to reshape the back of the grip strap, a strategy I strongly DON’T recommend! My best solution to getting a comfortable grip on my J frame was to add a Thai (via e-Bay) set of smooth combats. The sad truth is, you won’t know what fits your hand comfortably until you actually have it in your own hand.

CaliTrav - My 640-1 is charged with 135 gr Gold Dot .38+. I have shot .357's with it but it's not a lot of fun. Smooth wood boot-type grips are good for pocket carry and don't catch on clothing or gather lint/debris. Personally I like S&W's factory-wood target stocks or rubber --Hogue, Pach, etc.-- on my range and field guns. Recently I added a Tyler T-grip to a couple N-frames with magnas and that's working well. I just acquired a J-frame Tyler T grip and will try that out with a set of magnas or Patrick Grashorn stag stocks. But I'll stick with the wood Spegel boot grip on the 640-1 for pocket carry.

While these may look large and unwieldy, they are pretty narrow and really don't add to the carry profile. They allow a full grip and mitigate recoil nicely. Not that expensive, so worth trying if they at all interest you - they are Ergo Deltas, and just ignore the Batman jokes.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

I have gone with the eagle secret service grips on my "j" frames, but smooth wood. I tried rubber, wood with a gripping surface... nothing worked as well for me as smooth wood. Only .38's . The one "j" I have that is .357 has a much larger/longer rubber grip.

I like the old Herrett Shooting Star Conversion Grips (not the Shooting Ace).
They can still be found on Ebay.

Custom wood or rubber grips, as long as they cover up the metal back strap
that will cut down the recoil sting with heavier loads, if they fit your hand size.
I have Hogue's on my little snub nose J frames.

Uncle Mike's fit the bill
Used Uncle Mike's Boot Grips on my back-up for many years, just the right size and no grip issues.
