Hanging a revolver in a gunbelt/holster for ready access
There are times when I want to have my 686 SSR loaded, in its holster on a gunbelt hanging from a hook so it's ready and handy to strap on if I need it. It won't hang that way with the muzzle down. I'm looking for ideas on how to hang it.
In case you're wondering, I'm in a rural area and there are no children in the house. I keep guns locked up when I'm not close to them or wearing them.

My first thought is to use a holster with a thumb break strap to keep it from falling out.

Perhaps try two widely spaced hooks, or the back of a chair of correct width. Or a mannequin?

I am not sure why the position of the muzzle is an issue.

Does the gun have a short barrel? I'm trying to understand why the muzzle end of the holster won't point downward.

Lol, mannequin. Those would work, but trying to keep it out of reach from pesky cats. They'd probably love to have at that Galco leather.

Will the belt wrap around the tree trunk? If so lay it across two of the pegs.

Your problem is that your holster’s center of gravity is too high relative to the belt to hang muzzle down with the gun on board.
A holster that positions the cylinder below the belt would work, but may not be the position you want your revolver when you’re carrying it.

As was mentioned by Alan, wrap it around the trunk. You need to unbuckle it to get it around your waist anyway.

You might put a wooden peg- cabinet handle etc vertical on top of a chest of drawers or some other furniture and try hanging the gun belt on that.
I Peg
---- Dresser/Tree trunk
Or just put another wooden peg on the top of the tree trunk and try that
Recent I have been doing that with a EPS tanker holster and a 25-2, different from your rig but a set up like that might work for your gun belt.

Ignore the belt hang. Put a peg in the headboard (?) and hang the holster (not the belt) from it. Angle the peg to present the revolver the way you want. The belt can still be attached.

Wrap the belt around the holster several times to leave a small loop of belt for hanging.
I'll try to describe better:
Take the buckle end of the belt and wrap it around the holster, going around the back of the holster first. First wrap it low enough to hold around the barrel part of the holster, but it doesn't need to be very tightly wrapped. When just about to wrap the buckle end, bring it upwards behind the holster. Bring the short end of the belt (with holes) around to the back and thread it through the buckle. That short loop of belt coming from the holster to buckle should be good to put over a nail or peg to hold the holster and revolver vertically against the wall or post.
Leaving the loop beyond the buckle a little bigger (use holes nearer the end) makes it easy to slip the loop over a bed post as another hanging alternative. Easier to do than to describe. Hope this helps. - Bill

i think that using a holster for your bedside gun is a really good idea, because it means that if you wake up to a bump in the night you can strap it around your waist and have both hands free for flashlights, door knobs, etc.
i'm currently doing the belt wrapped around the holster thing, similar to BillB. i also have combat pants hanging in the closet with a belt and holster pre-threaded through the belt loops, but getting those on in the dark is a lot slower.

Roll the belt around the holster and put it in a drawer or inside a cabinet door.
With a good flashlight next to it.
Hanging it on the pole is not going to work.

Where there is a will ... there's a way !
Belt wraped arond holster looks good .
My only thought was , refering to photo #1 , turn the belt around on the peg so the revolver stock/grip leans against the post and not out into free space ... but the revolver might be hard to grab ... you would have to try it and see .
Nice Job,
Gary

PERSONALLY, I would rest a shotgun against that post... you won't even need a flashlight.

You put a series of holes in the belt in order to insert the buckle. Why not put a slightly larger hole on both sides of the holster, and then install 2 pegs at an upward angle where you want to hang the revolver. The belt buckle will be undone and the rig will pull off the wall in a flash, ready to be worn.

If you don’t want it wrapped up like that. So you can grab and throw belt on. Which is how I’d want it but that’s just me.
I’d run another spike in that trunk spaced wide enough that I could sit the gun and holster horizontal. Like spike under trigger guard at stocks and another spike back about 1.5” from muzzle end of holster. Maybe wrap rawhide strip around spikes so they won’t scrape up trigger guard/stocks area or scuff holster.
Lean the rig back against the trunk and let the belt dangle free downward behind. So I could just grab it and roll out

I would like to have the gun in my hand too, but it would be nice to have the gun belt on in case you need to holster it to have both hands free for whatever reason. Beats trying to stick it in your underwear!

I keep a cz82 double action first shot 12 rd mag 9 mm mak, unholstered nearby the holster with another 12 rd mag, but my alarm system is my pup. I can read his tone of bark.

FWIW, I've read that shoulder holsters are often used by bodyguards so they can quickly put on their gun, spare mag, and even a flashlight if they're off duty sleeping but have to get into action quickly during an emergency.

I played around with one several years ago. Not a good one, though. I think it was Uncle Mike's. It does take some fiddling and adjusting, but I think once you've got it adjusted it's just a matter of slipping it on. Mine was for my Beretta 92FS, and although I never went out and about with it (CC was a no-no except for the wealthy and well-connected where I lived at the time), it was reasonably comfortable. I keep playing with the idea of getting a better one to experiment with (the Kramer one is appealing), but it's pretty much down near the bottom of my list of priorities right now.

I have my 5" 686+ in a cross draw/chest/ shoulder holster that I hang on a peg in my office when in the house, or in the shed when I'm working in my woods behind the house. I wear it when I hike with the dogs every morning. It will pretty much point muzzle down if my binoculars are adjusted out of the way. It's very easy to get on and off. Love the 686's

I've used a couple of inexpensive shoulder holsters for woods guns. They worked okay if you had pants and a belt to secure them to, but if they were just hanging they flopped and were difficult to draw and reholster. For a bump in the night gun, a holster and pistol belt are better in my opinion. If need be I can strap it on naked. And if you do use it naked and you find out that noise you heard was your drunk buddy and his wife trying to play a prank on you, you can slide the holster over to conceal your "back up gun". Don't ask me how I know.

"inexpensive shoulder holster" = junk
An X-15 or Miami Vice can slip on like a vest or jacket ........ the MV style give you a gun and 2 spare mags....................and hands free..............

One could perhaps keep the said belt , with a flashlight, zip ties and a leatherman in a dresser drawer.
One could possibly use a Police issue belt with snap closure which are very sturdy and very easy to put on in case of things that go bump in the night.
Pure speculation of course

First, you should not store a handgun in a leather holster... your finish can be affected. Next, get one of those gun magnets several places are selling and mount it where you would have hung the gun. That way you can point the muzzle in any direction that is preferred. You can still hang your gun belt / holster close should you want to go mobile.

Groo here
Try this on for size
If this is a quick access rig, use a cross body strap[like a bandoleer]
or a chest holster.
I have one from a Australia saddle company made to take most any
belt holster.
Just throw it over your head and drape it across the chest.
the trick is the strap has a 1/2 twist in it that allows the strap and holster to lie flat
