Why were the stop notches on N frame revolvers changed from the narrow -2 and earlier variants to the wider -3 variant?

To prevent the cylinder from unlocking under recoil and rotating backwards...thus the next time your cycle the gun, you are indexing to the round you just fired. Also, this fix was not done in 1982, but later in the 80s, around 88 or 89.

The problem was mostly in the 629 series with heavy loads, but all of the N-frames got the treatment.

The notches were changed starting in very late '89, and along with the internal bolt block was one of the last two upgrades included in the endurance package.
I'm going to send you a couple of PDF's that explain all of this in detail.
