Default 627-0, Model of 1989

This monster has a BEK prefix (second group). Lots of mass to this one.

Nice one! Is the top strap checkered like the older 27s?

Yes it is. I believe I saw a picture of one with a scope mounted on it in the happy birthday thread for Kurusu. Not sure of the exact model on that one.

Yes all(I think) 5276 examples of product code 101024 have checkered top straps.

Truthfully I am not certain of the -2 engineering revisions as I have never held one those. The -2 is the rarest of the batch

Is the "MODEL OF 1989" factory engraved/ roll stamped? Sure could have been done better; the 'L' in 'MODEL' is buggered up and the 'M' isn't fully stamped. For what you pay for these now, they should at least be well finished.

i don't know how they applied the letters, but you are right about them. Frankly, I hadn't even noticed until you brought it up.

The "Model" looks almost like it was scratched on by hand! If the factory did that, it was pitiful work. Still a most desirable gun and very expensive when found. One I have always wanted for many years but unable to obtain. Yours looks to be in excellent condition. Thanks for showing.

Just wondering what one as described might bring in today's market. Inquiring minds want to know.

Thumbs up An Unusual Modern N-frame

Everyone should have one!
I found mine about 3 years ago in a gun store mainly dealing in tactical firearms.
The proprietor could expound endlessly on ARs, and the like.
But, he had no clue about the 627-0.
That worked out well, for me… $800 out the door and it was mine!

It is a beast of a gun at 50 ounces. I had one (627-0), but never took to it, sold it and never looked back. It shot better with more hand filling conversion stocks. They gave much better support than the ones that came on the gun. It's certainly a nice gun, but doesn't lend itself to long range sessions.

The S&W Combat stocks just don't fit my hand well. Targets work fine for me. I think the 627-0 is more suited to hunting than range work outs. It is a hand full and felt recoil is tame with full blown magnums compared to the K frames. I'm not sure what I will do with it, as I don't hunt much any more and it doesn't fit well in my collecting focus. It will just get put away for now.

The 627-2 versions do not have the top strap checkering of the 627-0. I think the 627-1 is the rarest of this line, as I have never seen one. I have and have seen several 627-2s, but never a -1. I have had a 6 inch 627-2 for over 20 years and have shot thousands of rounds through it.

Welcome to the 627-0 club! The few. The proud!

The 627, -0 and -1 have checkered top straps, the -2 does not; the -1 has the new rear sight base. The -0 is the only Smith to have that designation, 5.5” barrel since it was an option for the RMs and the 627, -0 and -1 are the only stainless of the 27 family with checkered top straps.

Great information CH4, much of which I did not know. The trigger pull on this one is a little heavy so I'm installing reduced power Wolff hammer and rebound spring.

I have a 627-0 that I bought used many years ago. I have shot it a lot, and I think it was shot a lot before I bought it. Came with original box too. I love shooting it and it's very accurate.

I have handled 3 of the -1s. One of which I own and is pictured above.

I have seen a photo of a -2, but not from an angle where the top strap was visible. I have never held a -2. I have also held several of the original 627s

I would guess that the -2 was the rarest of the group. The -0 is the most common by far. The no dash and the -1 are second and third in rarity, but I could not even guess in what order. I guess it all depends on what part of the country we look. None of us actually have the National picture when we are discussing less than a few hundred revolvers

I saw the 627-0 featured on the cover of American Handgunner or Guns & Ammo, can't remember which, back in 1989. I immediately went out and bought one. Still have it, great trigger, but a heavy beast. Here is a picture of the label showing the 1989 price tag. That $489.99 cost in 1989 would be roughly $1,063.73 in today's dollars. Anyone else ever shop at the Discount Gun Mart in San Diego?

It is? I have a -2. It has a fluted cylinder but no top-strap checkering.

But is it product code (SKU) 101024?

With the unfluted cylinder it should be a different product code

Do you still have the box? The product code and SPEC ORD number would be very interesting

I was under the impression the dash 1 is the hardest/rarest dash to come across. Over years of collecting 627's yes the 627 dash 2's are also rare but thought they were much easier to find than the dash 1's. I owned 4 at one point of the dash 2's and over the years my dash 1 was by far the harder one to come across and the only one I have ever seen boxed. Only other 627 dash 1 I have seen is fellow member Coltsaa's beautiful one.

I have seen a few of the Beautiful 627's you have posted over the years and also as a fellow 627 collector I do agree by far the dash 1 is the rarest dash to come across. I literally spent years searching for one and happened to luck into one that also happened to be a very rare target champion that was export only. Only other dash 1 I have seen has been ColtSaa's he has posted on here. I owned 4 dash 2's at one point and still have one but they seemed definitely quite a bit easier to come across though still rare bird to find as well.

Not yet, but the plan is to take it out today. The Atlanta PD 10-6 is going along too.
