UPDATE Sent back my 442 for repair
Just giving you guys who are thinking about sending a firearm in for repair the timeline I’m four weeks in and counting. I’ll post when I receive it back. I called to check on it and the person that answered the phone said it’s only been four weeks you have a ways to go yet. Sent a gun back to Ruger for repair had it back at my door in 10 days.Crazy. Just got an email it will be delivered Monday by FedEx. 5 1/2 weeks I guess that’s not to bad considering the crazy world we are living in today.

The one time I sent a firearm to S&W, (M&P15 TS), for an issue back in 2016 or 2017, I had it back in a week to the day.
Hopefully, things will get better.

When did you send the Ruger in for repairs? Unless both firearms were sent back at the same time for the same repair it’s not the best comparison especially if the Ruger was done pre-COVID. Just saying.

Last year on March 16, 2020 I ordered a 5" GP100, Lipsey version .327 FM. When it arrived at the FFL and I got it home, the wood was loose. I called and they sent UPS to pick it up at my home. It was back at my house 10 days later, fixed. A month or so later I had an issue after shooting it, less than one cylinder-full. Same thing, UPS had it back about 10 or 11 days. There was an issue with the trigger return spring thing that basically holds the trigger assembly in the frame, it wasn't seated correctly and had to be cleaned out in the little hole and the sides filed a little. I've never had to send a S&W back so I can't compare turn around times. But, it sounds like both repairs to the Ruger were simple (for anyone besides me!)
Just curious, slabside2, what is/was the issue with your 442 S&W? (If you don't mind me asking?)

Let me answer some ?'s here . I recently had a bad experience , I bulged the cylinder on my S&W 29-10 , 4" , (bad foreign powder ) . I have always felt it was my " ole work horse " . I called S&W customer service about a repair . The guy was very nice , said they could and would fix it but ---- I wouldn't be getting it back till sometime between thanksgiving and xmas . He mentioned that the performance center is really backed up right now .
What he said next really surprised me ? If I had a competent gunsmith , why not just buy a new cylinder for $139 + tax , shipping and have him fit it ? That is exactly what I did . I had the new cylinder in 7 days , another 7 days and I had my 29-10 back again , fully repaired for a total cost of $217 , parts and labor . Everybody that sends in a gun for repair / mods etc expects the best of work , yet aren't willing to give S&W the time to do the job right , when your turn comes up . Yours is not the only gun there to be worked on . So get in line and wait your turn , or use a local gunsmith . Either way --- stop your whining ! ! Regards Paul

I have had two repairs in different years at S&W:
- Pre-pandemic: Drop-off to Delivery was 10days.
- May of 2021: I asked S&W and they said 8weeks turnaround. Funny thing is I received a return shipping notice 6wks in that was canceled by S&W the same day so I called them up. They said that situation sometimes happens b/c part of their system is automated... "ok"... so I asked my status and they said my repair is 'done' and awaiting security check/shipping. No shipping notices arrived for a few days so I called them back and they stated it has only been 0.7 wks and I should expect to need to wait a FULL 2wks to get through the security check / shipping. I interpret that as meaning perhaps the security check / shipping department in question is working part-time, understaffed, or someone critical to sign-off is out sick... and I also interpret that likely S&W did not ramp-up repair staff in accordance with their increased sales which is a conservative and perhaps fiscally responsible approach assuming their customers are willing to wait the full 8wk duration for a FREE repair.

I had the same experience as Jackal11 with the gun being finished but having to wait on clearance from shipping. It's a sign of the times for S&W.
My Rugers have taken less than a week to be fixed and returned. Helps to live in Arizona.
I'm not nocking Smith. They do a fine job on repairs but I've found I need to send 3-mails and phone calls to get satisfaction. Years ago I learned that everyone has a boss so when you talk to someone ask them for their bosses name and phone number. Follow up on it. Amazing how that helps.

I'm now on week 5. When I called I learned there is also a two week shutdown for annual facility maintenance in July.

I sent a .380 semi in to S&W for repair in May of 2020. They told me 6 weeks, but impatient me started calling at 3 weeks. Each time I called, they told me it would be 6 weeks. In the end, I had my gun back in week 6 with all the warranty repairs completed and the gun working perfectly.
In hindsight, they did everything they said they were going to do including following the timeline they told me up front.
No problems at all....other than my own impatience

S&W non-warranty work
I sent an 8 3/8" 27-2 in for a rebarrel (to 3.5) on April 8, 2021. They told me that the 8 3/8" barrel was fused to the frame and needed to be cut off, and was I OK with that. I got it back on June 28, 2021. You can't even tell that the 3.5" barrel wasn't original to the gun. Very pleased.

There’s a delay everywhere, blamed on COVID, but who knows. I sent a (ham) radio in for repair and it took over six weeks .

Today... S&W said their shipping delay has increased from 1wk, to 2wks, to currently a 3week delay after repair.
I dunno, perhaps they are prioritizing shipments of new product over repair returns.

Just a wild guess: An awful lot of businesses were ordered closed nationwide by local powers-that-be. For those that have survived, perhaps it is more profitable to get new product out the door, while warranty work takes a back seat. My .02

Mine was just return shipped 2 business days past 8weeks.... A customer rep on a prior call (on week 7 of the repair) erroneously told me it would ship 'that week' and that person even typed that statement into the comments related to my repair. So when I called at the end of 8weeks, the rep 'elevated' my return and got a manager involved to push it out the door... So, did my item return ship 'on time', or was it really running behind and pushed out the door?
I do not know, but here's to hoping 8wks is the real timeline for you, and not longer!
