The Model 19 Carry Comp is now available with a 2.5" barrel.

This would be a good time for a snarky comment...

I am a long time S&W fan, but I am having a hard time trying to find anything of value in the current guns they make. I am pretty sure this is a gun that they've made some sort of version of before.

Wish they would do away with that porting/front sight arrangement. Simply can't see the benefit of the port on a carry piece.

Interesting development indeed, especially since the 3" version is really a 2.75 rifled barrel with the smooth bore in the comp section. They managed to decrease the barrel length even further and still keep the full length ejector rod.

To each their own regarding the previous comp comments. I am a fan of the feature. It works very well at reducing muzzle flip with magnum rounds. S&W does have a model in their current line up without the comp... the regular 66 in 2.75 BBL.

I might buy one. I haven't bought any of the "current" model 19s or 66s yet. I just might have to give that one a shot.

I have the 3". It's a very nice shooter that I can put lots of rounds through and not worry about wearing my collectible pre locks.

This new 2.5" bbl sure looks nice on boot grips... looks more balanced than the 3" on shorter stocks.

I also have the 3". It is a fine shooter, though I would honestly prefer it not be ported, but that's the only way to get a 3" K frame these days.

It's interesting that they managed to keep a full length ejector rod with the 2 1/2" version.

It's as if a true non-ported 3" K frame is against the rules or something. I guess it would hurt the value of the older 3" 66s, not that S&W would be directly affected, but hey I'm glad they're lookin' out for the collectors. The value of older Pythons seems to have taken a hit when the new ones came out.

The Model 66 Combat Magnum (AKA Model 66-8), 2.75 inch or 4.25 inch barrel, neither are ported. Finding one is the trick.

Looks great and I actually prefer the porting and sight combo. I would just like to see this with a 7 round cylinder

As uncleted327 mentions, that is the L-Comp

This revolver started life as a Distributor Exclusive offering back in 2000

The contracted run was for 200 pieces, but many more have been made

The revolver shipped with two sets of grips. The Ace Secret Service boot grips and these Hogue Bantam grips

This configuration has been so popular that it has been in production for 20 years.

I don't understand why they shortened the front sight distance from the rear sight ??

I will pass on this new model.

I have the 2 3/4” 66-8. I really like it. I’m tempted by the 19. Comp Carry, but think I have the better shooter.

The comp port is in front of the sight. You can't really put the comp behind the sight...

2x…and add to that no flat spot at 6 o clock on the forcing cone, full length ejector rod, and a ported muzzle. I’m in.

Why the top ?

Shotgun barrels are ported on the sides at 11 & 1 O'Clock.

If you look at compensators on competition handguns, you will find the prevailing design to be like the K-Comp: a large open port on the top.

I don't have the engineering background to explain why the large open port is more effective on handguns, but if it wasn't I'm guessing it wouldn't be the type most used on competition handguns. As far as I'm aware, all of S&Ws "Comp" revolvers have used this design.

There were a few PC revolvers with Mag-na-port style ports at 11 and 1, but I don't recall those being marketed as "X-Comp".

I can't think of a single competition pistol with just one large carry comp / L-comp style top port. May I ask what competition guns you have in mind? Thanks!

They should do carry comp and L-comp versions with the porting used on the 629 Stealth Hunter. Maximum sight radius and less prone to collect stuff in the port(s).

Maybe I should have said "port(s)".

See above.

The point was that you rarely see 11/1 mag-na-port style ports on competition guns. The prevailing design is for vertical ports, though some do have smaller side ports in addition.

Default model 19 Carry Comp 3 inch question

It looks to me the 586 Carry Comp 3 inch has an extractor rod lock in the shroud. The 19 carry comp does not. Does it have a ball detent lock?

The 19-9 and 66-8 were redesigned, the forward cylinder lock is a ball detent in the crane instead of locking the end of the ejector rod.

Agreed Kaaskop. I can't stand looking at that front sight not being at the front of the barrel. It makes me think, "What were they thinking?

So is the 2.5 no longer available? I can’t find it on the website. Did they only make this for a minute or what?

No, it's brand new. Using my brave browser, the site lists them in the L frame section. You have to select the PC 19 and there is a "configure" button.

Assuming you can find any K or L frame, you're not finding the one you want at you local ffl.

13323 is the product number for the 2.5" M19 Carry Comp.
