I just picked up a 686-1 snubby yesterday for $720. It’s a shooter and not perfect with some pitting, but I’m thinking it will clean up nicely. I’m also going to refinish the stocks. It will be my first attempt at that. After reading through this thread, I’m thinking I got a pretty good deal, even given the finish issues. Gun mechanics are sound.

For what it's worth: A 686-3, 2 1/2" in box came to me in 2017 for $1107. Early this year, the same in a No Dash came home for $1100. BOTH are my preferred 6-shot wheels. Both have smooth combat finger grooves. Both seem to be terribly hard to find in this neck of the woods.
Y'all take care, Bo

In connection with the thread I just started about a 17-1 in the forum about its era of production, my late bud’s daughter sold me back a 2.5” 686 Plus -4 that I’d sold to her dad years ago. She wanted just to give it to me for helping her get his guns ready for sale, but I couldn’t rationalize that when they have 3 kids, etc., so I got her to accept $500 for it. We both came away with happy hearts. I missed that one for a long time and I’m tickled to have it back for a couple of different reasons, one being that it was my bud’s for so long until he passed.

I too have a 686-4 pre-lock, combats, 2-1/2" and 7 shots
Can anyone tell me when and for how long S&W built this configuration?

I was offered one today at a gunshow with the original combat grips and correctly labeled original box for $3500...As a bonus he would have thrown in the Lew Horton 3" 629 also with combat grips and original box at no extra charge...

I believe that configuration was made for less than a year in 1996.

Recent auction 2 months ago had a 2 1/2" 686-4 with original combats in original box hammer for $1639.00 before fees, tax and shipping.
I recently sold one in original box with original combats for $1500 to a forum member.
Still have 2 more 2 1/2" 686-4 with rubber grips and no boxes.

I bought this one a while ago. 686-4. One of the best triggers I've had. Wearing Herret's retro combats, very comfy grips.

I just bought a 686 no dash for $700, asking price was $750. No box and came with round butt magna's. Price seemed low to me.

I gave $1300 for this -1 within the past 6 months (probably overpaid but happy anyway). Came with nice combats but like these bigmtnman's stags better!

Nice find! I haven't seen a pre lock 2.5" 686 in 4-5 years - I would have bought if I did. If it were mine, I'd bead blast it and send it to H and M for black nitriding.

This 2 1/2" 686-4 was my nightstand gun for many years.
It will be up for sale soon in the Guns for Sale Forum.

I was actively trying to keep a list of 686-4+ guns for a while. Haven't done anything with it for a few years now. I had all 3 barrel lengths too. Now I just have a 2.5" and a 4".

I know this post is about snubbies but I just had to bring this up. Way back in 2001 I was at my LGS when I saw a very pretty revolver that I decided to buy on the spot. It was a NIB S & W 686 PP no lock with a 6" barrel. I paid $599.0 + tax. I've never regretted it. I never replaced the original Hogue grips because they really worked. Loved shooting that gun!
Recently I gave it to my son because I wanted to make sure he got it since it meant so much to me. I promised to come back and haunt him if he ever sold it after I died!

I'm surprised the one listed in the classifieds is still available. I have a 2 1/2 M19 so don't really need it but.......the thought still crosses my mind. I wish it had wood combats vs the goodyear's LOl

If it had the combat grips it would be $300 more.
A buyer can put pretty looking combats for the WOW photos or leave the rubber for range and carry.
The asking price is lower than what's being asked at local shows.

And you got a sweet 19-3 6” in the package deal 😜. Just do like the rest of us and say you got the 19 for a bit over 2 grand and they threw in a 686 Snubby for free LOL.
Hope you are still happy with them both Mike. She sure does look pretty with those grips!

You guys made me check my safe. I'd have bet money my 2-1/2" 686-5 had the lock but nope! I was fee!ing bad, thinking it had it, and consequently I was a second class citizen, but now feel much better considering I have about $175.00 invested.
I think Gander Mountain messed up royally when they priced it in their used case.
When did they switch to the lock, and what dash?

I've posted about before about this 686-3 I got recently at Sportsman's Warehouse-part of the Puerto Rican police highly neglected inventory they got.
Another Sportsman’s Warehouse rescue lol Pics in posts 2 & 6
Picked it up yesterday after my gunsmith did a thorough cleaning/smoothing of the action. I'm in to it for just under $700 as I also needed to replace the rear sight assembly. It still has a fair amount of scratches but mechanically it's great. I'd like to get a matte finish on it but not yet as it really looks much worse than the photo shows.
The grips it had fell apart when I took them off lol. I happen to like the Compacts for carry/helping to absorb recoil.

I have had my 686-4 Plus for a few years now. I believe it paid a little under 1K for her and thought that was expensive since my I got my 4” for a little over $400. They are indeed a great looking Smith!……Except maybe for a 3” or 2.5” Python. 😳

Found both of these within the last 12 months. Both are 6 shot -4’s. Between them both i have a little over $2400 in them. Sounds high when you add them together. O well i like them.

Earlier this year I parted with a LNIB 6 shot 2 1/2" 686-4 that shipped from the factory with highly grained combat grips for $1600 and a very good condition 2 1/2" 6 shot 686-4 gun only with Hogue Bantum grips for $1200.

Gunbroker.com is a great source for finding new and old firearms and ammo. I normally see plenty of old S&W's for sale when I browse their website.
EDIT: After posting this I clicked on link it created above and received a message that the GB webite has been reported to be unsafe. I have purchased lots of stuff from sellers on their website and never had a problem with the website or a GB seller. I have looked online for 357 Mag and 38 Spl ammo and most places say cuurently unavailable when trying to purchase. The GB website always has all kinds of ammo and some good deals. Lots of firearms too. You can Google them.

Last week I paid $850 (plus shipping and sales tax) for a NIB 7-round 686 Plus 3-5-7 TALO 3". Found it on Gun Broker. My price was 15-20% lower than prices for this new revolver on other sites. Now if I can only find a similar deal on a Ruger GL100 1780 (TALO 3" 10mm), I'll be a happy camper.

My 3" 686-6 + shoots as good as any of my other 686s. I didn't like the lock at first but I figure it will never change so I deal with it. I had a 2 1/2" 686-6 but it was a 6 shot. Someone wanted more then me so I sold it and never got a chance to shoot it. I paid $200. for the plus direct from S&W [long story]. I say if your not collecting and just want a good shooter then get a -6.
