Default Seeking Additional Information On Model 64-5, 4" Rd Butt, DAO

Hello Folks, I, along with perhaps many of us frequently like to 'update' our potential knowledge base regarding some of our favorite S&W Revolvers. So, in an attempt to do so with my current model of interest, I figured I would ask again here if perhaps someone has learned anything else pertaining to this somewhat uncommon M-64 example ?

As a brief background, I initially purchased many years ago as an exemplar to possibility interest my Department to adopt 'my' particular model as opposed to what we were currently using, which was the very same model, just with a few very useful, therefore important upgrades. This new M-64 was much the same as most of our newest purchases, but with the H.B. configuration, Round Butt & fully DAO. Well, although I had great expectations for this new model, it was not to be, as shortly thereafter we officially adopted an .40 S&W Sig-Sauer, so that was that ! ( I however was not unhappy at all, as I loved, & still do this DAO Model 64. )

Later on down the road I began to look into this somewhat uncommon model, & initially believed it was nothing more than an NYPD 'NY-1' Model, but I honestly don't feel that's what it truly is ? I then thought perhaps it was from the Brink's contract, but no, although quite similar, none of the Spec. Order numbers match up ?

Soooooo, if anyone happens to have any ideas as to what, or where this particular S&W Model 64-5 is, I would deeply appreciate hearing from you ? >>> The relevant data is as follows; M-64-5, 4" Heavy Bbl., Satin S/S finish, Round Butt with the standard S&W P.C. Service Stocks of the era, Factory Bobbed Hammer, & of course DAO. The numbers are; Serial # BET 1550, Product # 102505, Spec. Order # 0013. <<< I estimate the Manufacture Date as between December 1989 - February 1990.

Also, per the S&W Collectors Guide, 4th Edition, this model's S&W Product # is not noted. It's simply skipped over in the relevant list ? I would honestly love to know something more about this particular run, but have so far come up with literally nothing ? ANY information on this particular production run will be very much appreciated, no matter how trivial it may appear. As always, any & all replies will be truly appreciated. THANK YOU

Best, dpast32

I too have a Model 64-5 as you describe. However this one does not have a satin finish, but rather a high polish job that appears to be factory. Also it has serrations on the front and rear of the grip frame. The serial number is later than yours, with a CAF prefix. Like you, I have not been able to determine any information regarding this particular Model 64. The grip strap serrations seem to be highly unusual on fixed sighted S&W revolvers. When I acquired it there were Hogue rubber mono grips on it. So what it came with is unknown With the slight differences between our two examples, the mystery deepens. Hopefully someone will fill in the blanks for us. Blessings.

I have an example of the 64-5 RB too with a BSN serial number. It doesn't have the usual "address" on the frame and it appears to have come from the factory that way. I don't have it very handy, so I can't comment yet on serrations on the grip frame. I don't have any info on its history; bought it on GB in 2012 for $399. I purchased a new-old stock 3" barrel and had it modified the same year I bought it. I still have the 4" barrel around here someplace. I use it occasionally as a prop rod for photos. I've attached a couple photos of it with my Model 10 .357 that I had built locally and with my 3" 65-5.

Ohhh, how I would just love to have my 4" barrel replaced with a 3" example !! I suspect I could perhaps locate a 3" HB around somewhere, but would have to ship it off for installation & sighting in. At this point in time, I still have a few other gun related jobs which need doing, with some being more 'needy' than others. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know the approximate current cost of professionally re-barrelling an S&W K Frame ? And, will S&W provide that service any longer on a model of 1989 - 1990 manufacture ? THANKS Guys,

Best, dpast32

3" barrels are scarce these days. I've tried to get more and have struck out for the last year +.
Well, when I had that Model 10 done, the price locally was $150 - but it included not only fitting, but also the recessed Model 19 cylinder. A previous Model 34 4" to 2" conversion was around $65, if I remember correctly. I bought barrels elsewhere for both projects, by the way.
I have no idea if my gunsmith takes work from elsewhere (I see you're in NE) but I'm happy to give you his info by PM if you'd like to discuss it with him. His work is excellent.

Lots of threads here by folks who've shortened a 4" barrel to 3 inches.

Hey, THANK YOU Guys for your interest, I appreciate it. In any case, having it regardless should be more economical than buying another M64, especially if it's a 3" version, if of course such an animal can be found ? As it stands, I've only one 3" S&W Revolver left at this point, & that's my cherished 3" Model 640, possibly 1st year production IIRC. I'd love it even more if it was an 3" M642, but I don't think they produced any in the 3" variant. So, it is what it is.
