Default 617-6 Dumb Question

Quick one for all you gun plumbers out there. Working on a 617-6. First time working on one of the newer MIM guns. I removed the rebound slide per usual with my hand over it expecting the rebound slide spring to hit me in the hand (it did). However, in addition I found it spit a steel pin into my hand as well.

Pin in question is on the top of this photo. Let me know if I am missing something. All the other changes between the MIM and classic smiths have been fairly obvious, but this mystery pin doesn't seem to serve an obvious function that I am seeing.

Im guessing it rides inside the rebound slide in the middle of the spring? But I wanted to ask and be sure. Seems to be an odd addition?
