Default Project revolvers

Testing out my new Photoshop app, it's been awhile, back on the bike...

Model 686-4 w/7" barrel
7" barrel from later model 686, satin finish and Spegel RB to SB grips.

Model 586-4 w/4" barrel (Brazil export in 38 Special)
This gun has been upgraded with high profile sights and special Spegel grips RB to SB,
similar looks to the 4" M14-6 Roper guns from the PC.

Early post war (C Serial number) M&P
Minor upgrades - Pre-War RB grip adapter, and WW2 style shoulder holster....

Pre-war M&P Target
Nice gun, but the original 6" barrel had lots of blue loss due to blood stain sometime in it's past.
Nice canvas to start with, replaced the barrel with a 4" (period correct),
Humpback hammer (a bit later) and grip adapter, grips are original and numbered to the gun.

Enjoy

Note: If you click on the pic, you should see a larger version (maybe, or maybe not... ).

Really like those two M&P’s. Very nicely done.
Those Spegel stocks on that 586 are sublime. 😎

I have several that have been modified for competition (heavy barrels, sights, etc., but this one I had done (re-barrelled)..... well, just because. It conceals well for its size. They made them in blue, but not in stainless .

Airweight 637-2 lightened up to 12.5oz with titanium center pin and cylinder, reamed for 9mm & moonclip, with old Herrett Shooting Star grips to help absorb the increased recoil. I've converted three of these.

Default Here's a few more "Project guns" (minor upgrades in a couple cases)

Model 686-4 w/5" barrel
5" barrel from later model 686, satin finish and Spegel RB+ Boot grips.

Model 691-1 w/3" barrel
Only thing changed/added to this is the Patridge front sight and the Spegel boot grips....
....but that's enough for this cool package.

Model 686- CS-3 w/3" barrel
Since the CS-3 variation had a 1/8" wide front sight, this one was upgraded with a Patridge,
kinka makes it a bit special (1/10" wide front sight blades - Ala CS-1 - are tough to find).
Also has Spegels.

Enjoy...

I have more than a few but here are three. All three are 45 ACP.

On the left, a Model 25-2, barrel shortened to 4 1/4”, Gold bead front sight, (Paine?), round butt, double action only, bobbed hammer, smoothed trigger, grooves cut on backstrap.

Center, Model 1917 with barrel shortened to 4”, front sight reattached and modified to include a gold bead.

Right, Model 28-2, converted to 45 ACP and round butted.

Very nice....

It's great to see modified guns that are "purpose built/modified" to meet the needs of the owner. All those look very well put together and ready for action. The 45ACP loading is just right for a serious defensive piece.

I have a few that have been modified. First is my 25-2 that had way oversized throats. Converted to .45 Colt by Andy Horvath. Then a Model 19 and a Model 15 both of which were converted to .327 Federal.

Life is too short not to have the revolver you want or think you need. When I converted the Model 28-2, it was twenty years since S&W made a 4”, 45 ACP revolver and twenty years before the Mountain Guns. The 1917 followed and the Model 25-2 is the latest.

Default Custom Revolvers

Here are a few I've built over the years. I do all my own machining and action work.

This is a 686 PPC .357 with barrel made from a Douglas XX premium barrel blank, 6# DA pull, Wichita Arms sight rib. I have won many of my trophies with this one.

This is a matching 625 PPC .45 ACP with Douglas XX barrel blank, 7# DA pull, Wichita rib. Just because.

This is a 29 .44 Auto Mag with Douglas xx barrel blank, ported barrel, cut down Wichita rib, trigger guard hook, 7# DA, electroless nickel plated. This was my Bowling Pin gun back when that was a big thing. Won a lot of Pin matches with it.

Detail of Auto Mag trigger guard.

Here is my latest project.

As some may remember, I recently came into possession of a 1914 New Century originally chambered for the 455 cartridge. When I got it, the cylinder had been poorly converted to accept the 45 long Colt. See photograph. I have since acquired a new cylinder for it, from a Heavy Dutyb or an Outdoorsman and am going to have it converted to 45 S&W Special. This will give me a replica of the revolvers submitted by S&W for the Army Trial of 1907 to pick a new pistol for the Army.

Default Project 10mm

This started out as a 625 that had the barrel cut down and a funny looking fiber optic stght installed. A forum member supplied me a cut down 10 mm barrel which I had cut to 3” and found a 10 mm cylinder from cylinder and slide
It all came together nicely😄

You know, a 3" 10MM revolver would certainly answer lots of questions, and carrying would be comforting..

Really nice execution, glad you removed that "funny looking fiber optic sight"..... good job.

Now, if it was my revolver, I'd go with a Patridge front sight, but I'm weird that way...

Enjoy that gun.

In 2004 S&W created a Stocking Dealer Special version of the 686 with Hi-Viz sights and a 5" barrel. I don't know how many were made, but word got out and as near as I was able to tell, every one of them was pre-sold before they ever shipped to the dealers.

However, a few years later, Numrich Gun Parts Corp managed to buy the overrun of 5" barrels from S&W and sold them on their website. I did manage to get one of these before they quickly sold out.
I found a rather rough 8 3/8" 686 on GB from a gun shop in Alaska pretty cheap. I bought it and put the 5" barrel on it. But the donor gun had led a pretty rough life, so I had no choice but to give the finished project a high polish finish to make it look right. I'm rather pleased with the results.

I've shown this one a number of times before. This started out as a bare nekkid Model 28-2 frame. Took me more than two years to come up with all the parts, but in the end I turned it into a custom 3" .45 Colt snub. This is one of my favorite revolvers.

Grayfox,
My journey pretty much matches yours for the M686 5". In fact, my brochure has the same fold in the same place as the one you posted (). In any event, I used the SKU for the gun, calling S&W and asked for the P/N for the barrel, then asked the nice customer service rep to see if they had any barrels in stock.
After ordering one, I had the PC do the change from my donor M686-4 (can't remember now if it was originally a 4" or 6" gun) and had them do the satin finish on the finished product ( I like that finish ever since they did the CS-1 & CS-3 guns).
I'm really happy with the gun, the 5" is a very handy barrel length.
Overall, I believe the -4 version of the M686 is the best and the basis for my 7" gun (shown above) as well.

Your gun is pretty handsome with the polished finish, the look is very balanced with that barrel length....!

Here are a few of mine. First is a 686, found the barrel on ebay and a unfluted cylinder. The second is a 681 fitted with an unfluted cylinder and a fiber optic front sight. Third is my take on a home defense revolver. It's a 64, fitted with a fiber optic front sight. Made a rail of stainless to mount the light, then bead blast.
