Most all commemoratives are dogs… unless you have an attachment or attraction to the commemorated agency - although the Texas Ranger which was the first commemorative still brings a good price. As noted above, they are hard to sell and will rarely bring the money a standard of the same model will bring. I had an FBI model that took about two years to sell and finally met a new agent fresh out of Quantico and gave him a deal.

I have a few commemoratives and like mine for various reasons.

This is only k22fan's rule of thumb. If undecorated but other wise identical guns were standard production and remain readily available then an as new in box unfired commemorative is worth what the standard production version in 90% condition would be worth.

In the same condition the commemorative is worth less. The exception is when the commemorative has a significantly different feature that was not offered in standard production. Examples are barrel profile or the cartridge it's chambered for. I do not know what model your commemorative is or whether it has differences other than its decorations.

However, for the last couple of years many guns have been hard to find and many have sold for prices that would have been crazy high three years ago. I'll bet there are a few buyers who can't find the standard production version at a reasonable price and consequently would over look your gun's decorations.

I agree 100% that commemorative inscriptions, etc., make a gun much less attractive to the average gun-savvy buyer. I say that even though I have my own "commemorative," a 649 inscribed with my name and career dates that was commissioned when I retired. But it isn't going anywhere, either.

Default A gift may be entirely different!

If you are about to be "gifted" a gun then there may be sentimental value beyond any commercial value to others, so it won't matter, but my experience has been to pass on all commemoratives (handguns and long guns), because they don't really "appreciate" with time...rather they are "locked into time", and even if they are a classic..they are still very tough to sell.

I took in a Colt Frontier Scout (22LR) 1963 Gettysburg Centennial, unfired, unrotated, in original beautiful french fitted wood case. Took over a year to move that gun out...and the only potential buyer was a man who had almost the whole series of Colt Frontier Scout commemoratives...except one..the one I had.

Only you can decide if the gifting people or occasion has extra "value" to you, but in general I say...less 25% of whatever same make & model are selling for on other sites.
