Default Hi, my name's Critch, and I'm a S&W-holic...

I've always wanted a DA S&W 41 magnum and I recently had an opportunity to get one..it's a brand new 57-6...right after I received it, there were some hiccups, but S&W took care of it quickly and with no problems. I took it shooting yesterday and I put 60 round through it, mostly 215 grain LSWC's at 1150 fps...not real stout loads by any means, but fun and manageable. I also shot six 175 grain Winchester Silvertips through it and they seemed wimpy by comparison.

The first few shots were real high, so I adjusted the rear sight down a number of clicks and it was dead on at 25 yards. I may put Hogue rubber grips on it for hunting, because I intend to use some Nosler 210 grain JHP's at around 1500 fps, I'll work that load up from 1300 fps to see what I like...most of my shooting will be the 215 grain LSWC's for practice.

I took it out this morning but I only got to shoot 18 rounds before the sky opened up and rained..what we call a "toad strangler" here in the Ozarks.

I will definitely be back at the range tomorrow..

Default Your 57-6

Critch,
Congrats on your purchase. I have 2 Model 57s myself and "back in the day" reloaded and chronographed various loads and never could get above the low 1300s with my 6" and using H110/296 and 210 gr jacketed. I know there are a few newer powders around but I think your 1500fps is not realistic with a 6" barrel. I`m not saying this to give you something to shoot for( did not intend to be a pun but it`s there). Be sure and consult current loading manuals that show pressures as I feel you will be exceeding safe pressures in your quest. No need to go and mess up a "keeper for life" revolver. John

I see loads out there at 1500 fps, but in my 50+ years of shooting .41 Magnums I've never shot one at that speed...realistically, I figure on 1300 fps being about tops with that size bullet...I don't' want to batter the gun or me...

I have had a Blackhawk .41 for years and never approached 1500 fps..I don't' know what those 175 grain Winchester Silver Tips run at,,,but I doubt they are anywhere near 1500 fps. Honestly, they seem wimpy.

Recoil doesn't bother me, but you're right, I doubt I'll really get near that.

Welcome to the .41 Magnum club. Great caliber...especially for a hand loader, which I see you are.

Sounds like a fine model 57 and a good and interesting program. As you say, 1500 FPS is unlikely.

Also depends on the soul of the revolver and whether it's "fast or slow". I always tried for accuracy and found that with CCIs, H110 under those same Noslers, and also with a safe, stout load of 2400.

Good luck and safe shooting.

I hope to be shooting my new 657 by this weekend! I've got a bunch of 210 LSWHC slugs!

Yea I have issues to with buying Smith wheelguns. I keep thinking 'this is the last one I'll get'... but it never pans out.

Now for my next act, I really want a snubbie or a 4 inch doiuble action .41 Magnum..I would obviously prefer a S&W, but a Ruger will do..

I hate to be thought of as an enabler for anyone's addiction but there is a gun listed on Texas Gun Trader as:
Quote:
Smith & Wesson model 357NG 'Night Guard' Large N frame double action six-shot revolver chambered in .41 Magnum. Features a matte black finish, 2.5" barrel with full underlug
Googling that phrase should find it right away...Good luck with treating your addiction in this group of goobers......Ben
