642-2 Cylinder Release Tearing Me Up
I think like many buying this firearm, it is a back-up piece for me.
The release on this thing just tears up my thumb knuckle worse than any handgun I've ever shot and I've been shooting for 45 years.
With that said, I'm gonna grip it how I grip it so the only modification other than changing the release that's a possibility is the consideration of a longer set of grips but even then, something needs to be done with the release.
I've heard of folks softening the edges of it, etc. so I thought I'd check in here to see everyone's thoughts, opinions, ideas and experience with something that I'm sure I'm not alone on.
Thanks in advance for any energy you can throw my way on this.

Attached is a pic of my 642 where I took the bottom edge of the cylinder release down. I used a Dremel tool with the part off of the revolver while doing the work. This small amount was enough to keep from drawing any more blood.

Pretty crazy that it's hardly noticeable that you took anything off yet it made enough of a difference. I guess it's definitely worth a try - Thanks

As I think about it, I also took down all the checkering on that cylinder release a bit, too; not just the bottom edge.

Yeah, it's looking in the pic like you shortened the height, at least compared to mine, and then removed the checkering and softened the edge on the bottom while maybe smoothing out the rest of the checkering.

My guess is you are primarily an auto shooter and shoot with a "high thumbs" grip. If you tuck your thumbs down like we were taught many years ago when revolvers ruled the cylinder release would not be an issue.

post #7 beat me to it, but you need to grip a revolver properly with your thumbs down.

Take a look at this release (pic found on net). It's the earlier style, but you could do something similar. Even spending some time with sandpaper would get you there. And if you wreck it, easily replaceable.

Very true on these guesses - BUT in all my early years learning to shoot handguns (age 7-21) I shot only revolvers so I am familiar with tucking my thumb but with the small grip, to get my wrist where I want it behind the bore that release and all of it's checkered glory along with it's sharp edges is lined up with my thumb

I am absolutely going to be doing this and will follow-up here when I do. I don't want to go to a larger grip that I know will get my thumb further away because the purpose of this piece is to keep it small so I want to work with what I have first.
If it ends up needing to be used as a defensive tool I'm sure I won't care if my knuckles get scraped . . . but, conversely, it sure doesn't make me want to shoot it so it should still be addressed and will be.
