Default Model 19-5

I came across a Model 19-5 with a serial number ALC 74xx It is finished in matte black. How can i tell if this is a diplomatic security service issue or re-blued ? if it a re-finish job what would it be worth ? It is in very nice shape. Thank you

Offering you welcome to this great S&W forum, where there are many experts (not I). Meantime, per SCSW2, there was a 2-1/2" USSS 19-3 that was matte (no indication of blue/black). The commemorative for the Secret Service was cased, blued, 19-5, and SS marked.

The model 19–5 sitting next to me, used daily for dry firing practice, is AAS 93XX. It's 99%, a 4" and the blueing is very dark, but with a good polish job underneath.

1985ish? by serial number, a factory letter is the best way to find out where it went and when. They are suspended until Jan to get caught up.

Refinish? Value? Pictures would help, impossible to say without seeing it!

4inch or 2.5inch? According to The Book, Secret Service guns were 2.5inch matte blue and were 19-3's. 4inch barreled State Department Diplomatic Security Service guns were polished blue and AYY prefixed serials. I have one of those that is lettered. There was also some 2.5inch State Dept DSS guns but I do not remember if they were matte or bright blue.

2.5” barrel, right?
Most of the matte black DSS revolvers were in the ANN & ANP prefix but I have seen them (have one) in the ALC’s.
What kind of trigger does it have?

The 4” RB DSS revolvers were in the AYY’s. The matte finished 2.5” with an AYY prefix were CTSP.

Looks like this? I have the box and factory letter. It appears unissued but the grips got banged around a little, maybe due to handling?

A DSS guy contacted me on this forum wanting to buy it or any others I knew of.

End label on mine
Looks like the letter was mistyped. Never noticed that until today.
