Hi,

I have been lucky enough to find a S&W 64-3 stainless 4 inch revolver. I have wanted one of these for quite some time.
I know the 64-3 was manufactured between 1977 and early to mid eighties but would love a more precise date and any other information I can get.
The serial number is BAP3109 and the gun is in Ireland, where I think it has been since new.

The SCSW 4th edition, Apendix B section on the 3-character prefixes has a list which correlates the year to a list of prefixes with known ship dates. Unfortunately, just because a different gun, or group of guns, shipped in 1988, does not mean that yours did also.

Does your gun have import/proof marks stamped on it somewhere? In Europe, those can sometimes be traced back to the year when the gun was exported from the US. For example, I have a gun that was exported to Europe through Belgium that same year, and later re-imported to the US. The proof marks on mine include a year code.

Thanks Pete for the year and prefix information.
I appreciate the grouping details and possible omissions but this is still really useful and helps place my 64-3 into a small group of years.
I will examine the gun for any additional markings to see if I can collect any additional information.
