Factory repair on FBI Commemorative 27
My favorite nephew owns a 1983 model 27 50th anniversary of arming of FBI agents. It is unfired. A couple of months ago he cocked the hammer and pulled the trigger letting the hammer down gently. The trigger would not reset. He sent the gun back to S&W and received an invoice this week totaling $112 for "replacing the rebound slide and cylinder stop spring" test firing and shipment back to him. Wouldn't an unfired gun still be guaranteed or is this a reasonable charge because of its age? Should he call Smith or just be quiet and pay the bill?

Is your nephew the original purchaser of the gun?

The gun was willed to him by his father, the original purchaser who was a retired FBI Agent.

I'd pay it to get my revolver back.
When Smith returns the revolver they will most probably return the old parts that were replaced.Examining the returned parts may disclose why they were replaced.

I would specifically ask S&W to return the parts they replaced when firearm was returned.Would pay them for work/parts if nothing was mentioned by either party beforehand.

It's a 40 year old gun. Will GM fix a 1983 Corvette that has never been out of the garage? Well worth the price to get it "rolling" again. Joe

Had the same issue with a S&W 544 Commemorative. Star ejector wasn't cut correctly and it was impossible to load 6 rounds. S&W stated (correctly) they were not the same company that sold the gun originally.

It’s reasonable for a company that changed ownership several times over a couple decades to charge for services. The amount doesn’t sound out of line especially if it fixes the problem, IMHO

I have one, too. Great gun.
Smith should fix it for no charge. They built it, nobody shot it. They should fix it. How many times they sold out doesn’t matter to me. They bought the name, they bought the problems.
Of course, they won’t fix it. S&W service has never been good in my experience.
I’d pay the $112 and chalk it up to experience.

No, but that's because Chevrolet didn't sell any 1983 Corvettes.

Frankly, I would pay to get it back. And move on, hoping it is properly repaired. I would not send it back again!! I have never seen a bad rebound slide!!
I don't think the factory has any idea how to repair older pre mim guns!!

I always recommend that a vintage revolver should never be sent back to the factory. There are SO many more skilled revolver smiths available that can do such a much better job on the older guns. There aren't any of these kinds of craftsmen left working at the factory.

In addition to the one you are thinking about - currently housed at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY - GM is rumored to have a second '83 in its private collection, which is not open to the public.

His statement was correct though...They didn't "sell" any. They built some...one (maybe two remain), none sold...

Smith & Wesson didn't start offering lifetime warranty coverage until 1989.
Not surprised, given the massive changes the factory has gone through (migrating from a first-class revolver company to a plastic assembling operation) that they wouldn't cover something like the OP's revolver.

The non-functioning rebound slide was actually part of the initial design of the FBI Commemorative; it was to be emblematic of an agency that was pretty and expensive, and yet, not totally functional.
