Default S&W 627-0, 1989, 1 of 2500 - opinions please

Saw this shiny heavy unfluted S&W revolver for sale at a gun show on Sunday. Price in US$ is 975.- and it has a wodden case with it.

I tried to talk them down by $ 100 but they wouldn’t budge. One guy said it was on consignment so they couldn’t touch the price. The other one said that was the purchase price so he could not lower it.

Typical gun show bs where two guys from the same booth will tell you two different stories.

Anyway I decided to sleep on it, and see if it would still be in their shop a few days later.

Now I am tempted to get it.

What da ya think ?

There is another one on Internet for the crazy price of $2700 which has not sold in a long time.

TIA

That would be a really good price here in the USA. They’re neat guns and they’re built like a tank! Those N frame Combat stocks would bring $300 or more by themselves.

Your market is completely different. The prices on some of the guns you folks are able to buy, including selective fire arms, makes me want to move to Switzerland!

That is an extremely good price on a very desirable revolver. I don't think it would last more than a few minutes on this forum if for sale here.

Congratulations

That is a fantastic price for the first stainless version of the Model 27, product code 101024

You need to wake up and get a deposit on it before it disappears

Actually 5276 of that product code were manufactured starting at 627 with no engineering revision and running through the -2 revision

With only 278 of the revolvers manufactured, the stop notches were already seeing damage. Smith & Wesson never realized how much mass the unfluted N-frame cylinder had when the holes were only for 357 cartridges.

So the bolt and stop notches were enlarged. This is actually one of the first modifications that became the Endurance Package. This is where the engineering revision was changed to a -0

It is unknown how the remaining 4998 revolvers were split across 3 engineering revisions, but everyone agrees that the -0 took the lions share of the revolvers

As to whether the -1 or -2 is the rarest, well that gets debated quite often

Great guns but the grips stink for shooting full power loads .

The 627-0 is an amazing thing to hold and shoot.

That price is roughly half current market in USA for these gorgeous revolvers in fine shape.

C’est un de mes préférés - de loin !

If it was in front of me here in the States, I would buy it and whistle all the way home.

Interesting that the one in Switzerland is a USA model, and not one of the export 627-0 seen below. This one had laser markings instead of roll on barrel. This belongs to another member here.

I will join the chorus of those saying buy it. If I ran across that gun at the price here I would buy it in an instant, and I already own one. It’s a great revolver, shooting .38 wadcutters thru it is a pleasure.

I really couldn't justify another S&W revolver but, it I was lucky enough to run into a deal like that, I would find the funds necessary to acquire it sooner than later!

I had one and sold it for big bucks. I just didn't care for it. Way too heavy. Didn't balance well with the round butt stocks or the conversion stocks. It's a nice revolver at an excellent price if you like it. I sold mine for $1750 three years ago to a very motivated buyer.

Thank you all for your opinions. I should know better by know, you guys are enablers and hardly ever say : “don’t buy it”, unless it’s an expensive clunker.

Thanks again everyone for the opinions and explanations about this model.

Picked it up, brought it home, fondled it a bit. Can wait to shoot it. With everything from stout magnum loads to .38 SPL WC

Until now I had no idea that they checkered the top strap and rear sight just like the classic Model 27. News to me!

That was a steal! Looks like it has hardly been shot. Those guns really tame the full power .357 Magnums. Those stocks are a bonus a well as the box. They did not come with a wood box in the US. Mine is about 100 digits from yours and came in the standard cardboard box. Ammo is just about impossible to find here, hope you have better luck finding .357s.

I do. Bought 2000 rounds of Top Shot at a good price a little while back (made by S&B). I also have a running WTB ad for ammo, many people stopped shooting, sold the gun and still have the ammo. I get a lot of contacts and buy it at very interesting conditions.

Glad to report back that it shoots as it should

I’ll need a bit more practice with it.

I bet it feels like a rimfire with those wadcutters.

Beautiful specimen. I have seen as low as the 31xx and as high as the 64xx serial ranges. My shooting buddy has one not much more than 100 digits from yours !

I plan on taking these with me to negotiate with Charon. Put them in the box with me.

Your revolver is really, really nice, OP, but I might be more jealous of your 357 stash!

Congrats on both!

I bought one in '89. Here's a target I shot with it.

Mine has Culina square butt grips on it. There's too much barrel for a round butt IMO. Also, easier to control for me.

I draw better with a revolver than I do with a pencil. I can't draw stick figures proportionately.

ETA

Here it is with some Hogue grips before I put the Culinas on it.

Yes, it's Mag-Na-Ported.
Negligible recoil with hot 170g cast loads. Like shooting a rimfire.

Further ETA:

Please note the green front sight insert. My eyes work best with green. I did this with most of my hunting S&W's.

With apologies to Will Rogers, I never met a box of ammo I didn't like. Nothing wrong with buying ammo by the case; you just don't tell anybody.

I’ll need a bit more practice with it.

It may help shooting if you replace the wood combats with Hogue rubber Mongrips. These grips will help absorb some of the recoil. Keep the wood combats for show and pick up a set of monogrips for shooting.
