Hello, new to the site and had a question. All my history of shooting is semi-autos and rifles but I quite admire the revolver format, more of a purist aspect. Anyway, what do the - designations mean?ie. 686-3. 629-2
Thought this may relate to barrel but sometimes it doesn't add up.

Howdy Recoil 357. Welcome to the forum. From what I have learned from the folks here, each new dash number means some kind of engineering change was made to the model. They definately do not mean the same thing from model to model.

An example of a change would be when they stopped using pinned barrels and recessed cylinders on a model, or when MIM parts replace forged parts, etc. Someone with a whole bunch of knowledge should put all of this info in a "sticky", as this question comes up a lot.

There are so many different models with so many changes made over the years, that it would be quite an undertaking to list them all. Perhaps such a list exists, and someone could cut and paste it here.

Welcome to the forum. The dash numbers like -1, -2 and so on represent engineering and minor design revisions. They relate only to a particular model, so a -5 model on, say, a Model 29 does not mean the same thing as -5 on a Model 649. You can get some good info on this with searches in this forum or on the Internet -- Wikipedia, Google, whatever.

Makes sense now, thanks guys. Ya that would be great if someone would work on compiling a log from all the knowledge on this site to create a data base. Kinda like a wikipedia were it could be updated. Thanks again, Murray
