i just had a guy drop off a 617-4 round butt 10 shot 4 inch gun.
and i am really puzzled. on the right side of barrel is roll stamped in big letters and numbers smith and wesson
on the frame below cylinder is stamped cfa 1314
inside the the crane on the frame is the serial number cfa 1314
when i took the gips off, there is no serial number on the botton of the grip frame.
on the side of the frame is factory stamped cfa 1314. my question is was this a special run of 617 guns. i will have some pics up later.
any advice or help is appreciated.
thanks friends
steve

I've seen a few of them stamped the same way.

It's just a guess, but all had rubber grips that covered the butt of the revolver obscuring the normal placement of the serial number.

The serial stamping under the grips satisfies the "hidden" serial number requirements of some laws.

I am not sure about serial stampings on the frame under the cylinder window on the left side, except to say that I have mostly seen them on LE contract guns.

The serial stamping in the yoke is standard.

Just before going to the IL system many revolvers had the serial stamped just below the cylinder on the frame. 617, 66, 686 and 629 come immediately to mind. There may be more but those are the models I've personally seen.

wayne,
your 100 % correct. i just got off phone after talking with sw rep. back in 2001-2002, for a very short period, sw laser etched the serial numbers on the side. batf came in and made them stop. way.in the range of maybe a few hundred the rep said.as all the frames being made were laser engraved with the serial number for that short few months period of time

the 617-4 I have has the serial # in the same places with one below the cylinder as well. It's CEU19xx With 8 3/8 barrel 10 shot. Also # 24 stamped on the bottom of grip frame. also roll stamped on barrel with big letters as well. My 617-6 has serial #'s in normal places.
