There’s one locally. Excellent condition, bead blasted, with original box marked BATF. It’s been there for about two weeks. $650
The first one I’ve seen in a long time anywhere.

In the current inflationary firearms market, $550 or so.

There was one at the Hilliard, OH Spec Ops gun show in “fair” condition; evidently well used and dirty.
Asking price was $700.
Vendor had several other J-frames - 2” Model 60, 3” Model 36 and others. None were marked with a price. After getting the quote on the 640, I passed on the others.

I think the .38 Special Model 640 is one of the best modern S&W's ever made. So I think the estimates of $550 to $650 for a nice one are a steal.
I would not be surprised to see an excellent example especially if with the original box, papers and tools bring $850. At least here in California. It wouldn't last long on a gun show table at that price these days.

Bought one from LeMaster Hudson's, Grand Rapids, MI about 6 weeks ago for $536 OTD. It was the pro model, no lock, new in the box. They have several other 640's with the lock right now. There website has their Armslist link on it. They have good prices overall, but not if you use a CC.
My bad. It was a 642-1 Pro model I got.

You have the original 640s that were. 38 Spl before the magnum frame. There is also a 640-2, built on the magnum frame but chambered in .38 Special. I believe these were produced primarily for the NYPD.

The original 640 .38spl is the only J frame I like-I know, I've got issues LOL. I don't shoot any of the bunch of the small S&W I've owned over the years but with the Hogue Bantam rubber grip it's my ideal J. Foolishly sold the one I had years ago, sigh.

Got one (no box) off gunbroker end of October for $500. Fired very little, but it had initials and badge number engraved on it. I consider that a plus.
