Default M547 3” K Frame. New Grips!

PHOTO OF NEW GRIPS ADDED IN POST AT BOTTOM OF THREAD.

Did paperwork on this Model 547 today. Can’t wait to pick it up - 7 day wait in MD.

The 547 is a no moon clip 9mm. Reputed to be the most expensive to produce S&W revolver, don’t know if that is true.

The grips aren’t original as far as I know. They should be RB targets from what I’ve read. I’ll put a set of Thai combats on it until I can source original style grips

Sorry for the at-the-gun-counter pics, but they’re what I could grab. I’ll post better photos in a week!

Thanks.

I missed an as new in box 547 for less $ sitting on my thumbs, then another for less $ with original grips because I put finding a 547 on the back burner and found it a day after it sold. This one I hopped on.

Amazing how a miserable bout of COVID, with two nights going to bed wondering if I’d make it through the night, changes your outlook on life.

I’m working hard on my revolver bucket list.

ETA: There are two 4” square butts available if you are interested. Asking price is high, but you never know. PM me if you’re interested and I’ll provide seller info.

Life is short, and none of us are getting any younger. If it’s something you really want and you can buy it without doing harm to family and home, you might as well jump in. That’s a good looking 547. I didn’t recall the RB model coming with a different type of stocks but I’m hardly making any claims for my memory these days. Enjoy your new revolver!

Now I understand your post in another thread about 3" guns

Very nice catch - congratulations. You will not regret your purchase at all, and it seems in prefect condition.

The one I have is very precise shooter with an amazingly smooth action, 3" and pinned. I got it from a former police guy's widow about 15 years ago, and I guess it might have been a test gun bought by the Belgian police force for evaluation. It has a serial number 8D4xxx, so I dated it back to 1981. It didn't unfortunately have the original grips, but Pacmayr Grippers, which I traded for Ahrends combat grips with open back. Very comfortable to shoot.

Enjoy it

I believe the grips on your 547 are the original. Never seen a picture of a 547 with targets. Enjoy it when you get it.

It’s the opposite for me, every photo of a 3” RB 547 I’ve seen shows RB targets. Except mine, of course.

I’ll do some more reading.

I’ll also take a look at the current grips, but regardless of originality, I don’t think I’d find a serial number.

Could also be that that some shipped with each grip.

Correct, the 3" guns shipped with RB Targets and the 4" with Magna stocks, but look for a matching serial number anyhow. Enjoy!

Here is a pic of the 3" with the original RB Target stocks...

I have since changed these to smooth RB Target stocks.

There were fewer 4" models made, but, for some reason, the 3" guns seem to command higher prices - at least that's the way it was when I bought this one, a little over a year ago.

Good luck on securing the one you're looking at.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Great photo, thanks.

Those are the grips I want.

The 547 is mine, I’ve done the federal and state paperwork, MD just has a 7 day wait.

I stand corrected on the grips for 3" 547s. They are also known as "banana" grips.

My 547 came to me with magna grips. It appeared to be ANIB and the magna grips fit it particularly well. By serial it is a later gun, so we will never know how it actually shipped. Given that they were supposed to ship with round butt target grips, Mr. Spegel's magnificent workmanship fixed my problem.

Haha. Yes I hopped on those. Fortuitous timing.

Tupperware, the seller, has a 547 4” SB he bought in new in the box condition several years ago.

That picture with the Spegel grips is what inspired me to get on Craig's "wait list". Eventually my 547 will also be wearing Spegel's. For now, here it is with the smooth, RB target stocks...

Adios,

I have a 3'' and like it. Due to its operating system its got a stiff trigger. Its quite noticeable to me as I do most of my shooting in double action mode.

I live in NY and also had a wait to get my gun, in my area it can vary from a few days to a few weeks. They work at their own schedule!

The action on mine is stiffer than my other K frames. I was wondering if it the chambering, gummed up grease or ?

Thanks for the info!

Mine is not noticable different from any other K-frame and has a smooth DA-trigger. Maybe a good cleaning/oiling under the sideplate will help. If never done, these guns go 40 years back, so that might be the reason.

While Mr. Spegel's grips are extraordinary, the targets you have are nothing to sneeze at. They are beautiful.

Back when these came out, I had a shop in VA. Did my Dist. a favor and took four of them . Could not give them away. After 90 days, I sent them back.

I think they were ahead of their time.

And should have been set up for moon clips.

But, apparently, they were made to customer demand and the public got the left overs.

When I ordered mine I thought I was getting the target stocks like in the picture on the brochure. When it arrived it had the the others. I was disappointed. When I finally found a set. I also picked up a speed loader but didn't really like them. Those speed loaders can scratch your gun if your not careful.

I ended up installing rubber stocks and it changed the whole balance of the gun. The gun has never been holstered it only goes to the range.

Shoots very accurately. The target is 20 or 21 feet. 6 shots were DA the rest were SA.

You will enjoy yours.

Greetings from Bel Air. It's amazing, isn't it, that we have all these gun laws in this state, and nothing seems to affect the one jurisdiction where the vast majority of Maryland's gun crime occurs...

Gee, you'd almost think the problem isn't guns...

That your 547 didn’t ship with the RB target grips is a significant piece of information.

Maybe my grips are original to the gun.

The idiocy of “gun control,” passing laws which only affect the the law abiding citizens and not the law breakers. Or, “How to make the law abiding vulnerable to the lawless.”

NICE gun...you will enjoy it once it gets out of "the pound"....

Had been looking for a reasonably priced one for years... Another forum member who I get together with once in a while told me he was selling his... I asked what he wanted for it and I said sold...and then he gave it to me for what he had in it which was several hundred less... Original numbered to the gun Banana grips, Magna stocks with a Tyler T-grip and a set of Pachmayer grips...speed loaders included...

Can't beat friends like that...Bob

Here's a picture of the tag. The guy who told me to order one showed me his and his had the combat stocks. Mine didn't.

If RB is the code for the target stocks then they were switched on me at work before I took delivery. RB may mean round butt.
I worked for a company that was owned by a parent company. The Parent Company also owned S&W.

We could buy guns at work at cost plus 10%.

I worked for a company that was owned by a parent company. The Parent Company also owned S&W.

We could buy guns at work at cost plus 10%.
The RB on the box means round butt; SB would mean square butt.

But we now have two know instances of 547 3” showing up without the RB targets. And that’s contrary to what is generally understood. ETA: Mine would be # 3 with RB Magnas, if that’s what they’re called.

Tonight I’ll get more into SCSW 4th.

I picked up my 547 today following Maryland’s seven day wait.

I can conclusively report the the grips aren’t original since the are numbered to a different gun.

I put a set of Thai knock off combats on while waiting for delivery of a great looking set of presentation RB targets and a great looking set of original combats acquired from a member here.

The 547 needed some tlc. It still needs a detailed strip and clean but 15 minutes with some Pennzoil and bronze wool did wonders.

You are SO close to the free side of the Mason/Dixon line.

Why are you still in MD?

To earn a living and wifey.

But despite some really dumb laws, it isn’t bad in MD. NFA is ok and I have SBRs and suppressors, hunting suppressed is ok. Night hunting for species legal to hunt at night is ok with NV and thermal…

Yeah, I've asked myself that question a lot over the years. My rifle club is actually in New Freedom, Pennsylvania, and I've thought about how nice it would be to live in New Freedom or Shrewsbury, or one of the other towns along the border, but at my age (68) I'm just not up for the hassle of moving...

Pennzoil? Motor oil? What does that do that Hoppe's #9 won't?

Hoppes #9 for cleaning, but I normally use Mobile 1 synthetic for lubrication. Couldn’t find it so the Pennzoil synthetic.

Advantages? It sticks around, it lubricates, doesn’t migrate or evaporate. Has detergent too, though I don’t know if that helps.

A quarter size “drop” of synthetic would be enough to do a couple of revolvers with bronze wool.

Plus the synthetic is tops for AR lubricant. Lasts a long time compared to, say, CLP before burning off or evaporating.

FWIW, 9mm rounds in an HKS 547 speed loader and in a 32 S&W/Long/H&R/Federal mag speed strip:

Question: How does that HKS speed loader work with the 547? The HKS loaders rely on gravity to get the round in the chamber once released from the loader. That is fine with regular rimmed or moon clipped rounds - nothing to impede their fall. With the 547 the individual extractor claws are bearing against the case, until they slip into the extractor groove, thus impeding the "free-fall" into the chamber.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I remember when the only thing at the Shrewsbury exit off 83 was a beer distributor.

Times have changed LOL.

Great question I hadn’t really thought about.

I just tried maybe 30 cycles with the speed loader in the photo.

If the charge holes are vertical the rounds pretty much drop in.

Anything but vertical and they need to be pushed in.

The pawls seem to be linked, so if one withdraws to accommodate a round dropping or being pushed in, it seems they all withdrawal.

ETA: The extractor works like a champ with the short 9mm cases.

The 547 was an overcomplicated answer to an issue that had been dealt with 50+ years before. Moonclips and head spacing were elegant solutions to using rimless cartridges in revolvers. If that design was used on the 547, it might still be in production.

As I understand the arise of the 547, it was to meet one or two customers’ requirements for a moon clip-less 9mm K frame. If that’s true, you can’t blame S&W.

But, even if true, they should have brought out a K frame moon clip version or a separate moon clip K frame model.

I bought a 3" and a 4" back in the 80's, both brand new. Bought as a curiosity, I still have them. They are still unfired. They are not for sale. And yes, I still say they were not the answer to a better mousetrap.

Thanks to a member here, my M547 now has a great looking set of RB targets. Feels great in the hand, can’t wait to go shooting.

My M19 also has new grips, and they also feel great.
