I was perusing Armslist yesterday when I saw my favorite LGS had put up a new ad. It was a gun I wanted and the price seemed fair, so I called him up and asked him if he would hold it for me until the next day. I have bought 7 guns from him in the last 6 months. Hence the title of this thread. Well, I bought 2 more today. Mod. 60 2" with original grips, box, tools and docs for $650. Maybe slightly high but within my comfort zone. Used but not abused. The usual handling marks, but nothing that won't clean up easy. It's a one man shop and it doesn't get alot of traffic, but there was another customer in there talking to the owner. Turns out he came in to see the Mod. 60. But Terry was true to his word and told him it was sold. After talking some it comes out that 3 of the guns I bought there recently were his that he had placed on consignment. While we were talking my eyes went to the wall with the rifles on it. A Remington 700 Long Range in .300WM. No scope but Leupold bases and rings. 26" heavy barrel with composite stock. When I told him it looked new, he said a guy had consigned it because it "kicked too much". Turns out the guy was about a buck forty soaking wet, and put one box thru it at the range and decided he didn't want to hunt elk anyway. So, several pictures of Benjamin Franklin were handed over and I walked out with both guns. I had some fake ivories, so I put them on the 60. What do you think?

The Smith is puzzling me. Both the box and the stamp say it's a 60 no dash. But it has a non-pinned barrel and a triple-alpha serial number, both of which were after the transition to the 60-1, if I'm understanding the SCSW.

the .300WM doesn't bother me, especially if I'm shooting at game, but it is up near my threshold for what abuse I willingly put my body through. If I need something bigger than that, I really need to rethink my decisions.

The 700 LR is pretty heavy and it has a decent recoil pad and stock design, IMO. It shouldn’t be too bad in .300 Winchester unles shooting a lot from the bench or prone, especially if used with 190-gr. or less ammunition. Having said alll that (), both of my .300 Winchester target rifles have muzzle brakes. Good luck with your two new weapons.

Yep. I wouldn't want to pack it all day for sheep or goats, but all that mass soaks up recoil better. Don't plan on shooting it too much. If I feel the need to plink with a centerfire bolt, my uncle's 721 in .270 will do just fine, thank you.

There's something magical about a 60 in .38, isn't there? Add to that, being in that condition and with the box. When I arrived here in 2010, there was a private seller with a nice 60 on his table. I was VERY interested, but he wouldn't allow me to check the timing (!), so I passed on it. An easy $450 for him. Oh, well.

Reminds me of being in my BIL's sporting good shop and seeing what looked like a brand new Ruger 77 in 416 Ruger in the used gun rack. When I asked him about it he said it came with a box of ammo with 19 live rounds and 1 piece of fired brass.

Said a guy bought it and had a scope mounted, left with it and was back the same day to trade it in.

OK, one more time.

The "first" model 60 was made from 1965 to 1986, so went from serial numbers with just digits (starting in the low 400,000s), to the R prefix after the GCA of 1968, and then the three-letter/four digit format in about 1983, after the barrel pin went away a few years earlier.

And the 60-1 (neither of them!) did not replace the 60, they were made at the same time. Kind of like the model 10-5 and 10-6.

That’s a nice looking Model 60. The pin thing is something I don’t give much thought, and I’ve never looked at mine, which is from that era. I’ll have to check. I imagine that was close to the time when S&W was doing away with pinned barrels and it just got marked the old way.

Edit - Well, as is normal for me these days, my memory had failed me. My newer Model 60 is considerably newer than yours (BPFxxxx serial number), and of course it is not pinned.

Nice M60, you certainly can find some nice revolvers. The barrel not pinned confused me too. Glad murphydog explained that for us.

Was there blood on the eyepiece of the scope. 😂😂

I own a 45-70 Marlin Guide Gun with the same story. I latter got the box of ammo he was using: Remington 300 grain factory.

Some people have only experienced recoil in 22's and on TV! while factory 45-70 isn't bad in my opinion, it is terrible to some. Especially if they never learned to hold a rifle correctly!

Yeah, but you're one of those Montana Boys. Story down here is you all shoot Barrett 50's one-handed. From the hip. One in each hand.

That's only for balance when they're climbing mountains to reach their ice-fishing camps......Ben
