.44 Mag Hunter Performance Center Single Action Misfires
I bought this brand new in December and love the feel of it and the accuracy. I had nothing to really complain about until last week. I always fire my revolvers with double action as I just find it more accurate to do so. I had a buddy come shooting with me and he fired it in single action and about 50% of the time, there was a misfire. I have never had even one misfire when I cock the hammer manually.
It just seems like the hammer is dropping too soon or perhaps the spring is too weak.
I shot an email off to S&W this weekend. I thought though that I might try this forum to see if anyone has any suggestions?

I wonder if you may have the terms of DA and SA mixed up? When you cock the hammer manually, that is single action. When you just pull the trigger to turn the cylinder and cock the hammer, that is double action.
There are 2 most likely causes of the misfires. Maybe the mainspring is not tensioned enough, or maybe the firing pin is too short. The firing pin should be at least .495. Many factory ones are less than that. The hammer does not go back as far in DA before it's released, therefore the spring pressure on it is less than in SA.

Yes, you're right, I mixed them up, sorry.
I just tightened down the strain screw snug after reading about it. It took about 3-4 turns.
I will get it up to the range this week and see if that fixed it.

Three to four turns is a huge amount. I predict the problem will be fixed.

Do you think I should use locktite on that?

If you have to tighten it up after every few shots, sure; otherwise, just tighten it well and check it once in a while. Normally, you might have to put, say, 1/4 turn a year on it, if you shoot a lot...

Do not use loctite on the strain screw. It should be tightened all the way in.

If it starts coming loose too much on its own you might want to try clear nail polish but for sure, no Loctite. My first Magnum Hunter was backing off on its own.

How about using blue Loctite? Definitely not red!

Your first mistake was not getting the one with the fluted barrel. So cool.
Loosening the strain screw is never a correct action. Tightening is always the correct action.

Blue Loctite would work fine. It will hold it from coming loose, but can easily be undone with a screwdriver (and no heat) if you want it out.

I just fired 18 rounds through it double action without a single misfire. I think this solves it. Thanks everyone for your help!!
