Default M64-3 DAO, Just grabbed it!

this DAO model 64-3 was taken in by my LGS yesterdy. Pretty decent, someone took some wool to it. Locks up quick. Quick look seems to indicate the DAO's are about $100 more than a standard 64-3.

Do I need to research further now to see if was part of a special production run or buy it and researgh it later..

I guess that would depend in part on what they are asking. $300? Yes, indeed. $1,300? Only with some well-documented history you think is worth it.

It looks to have a factory DAO hammer. If it is an NY-1 stamped gun it is worth more than a standard or non-factory DAO.

It would also help to know the asking price.

sorry, cropped out the price accidently. Price is $575, probably not going much lower maybe $550. No NY-1 stamping either. Got a pic into smith to see what they may offer. Not much other than it looks factory probably.Serial # is 7D34738

It’s a fair, not outstanding price.

Thats what I was thinking. To some degree I have to take em' when I see them, I don't do online. Plus, getting the call when one comes in is worth a dollar or two.

I think that serial # is too early for an NY-1.

Too much by a least $100. In my world DAO guns are worth less than conventional. I bought its twin about three years ago for $350, from Brownells of all places. Yes, they've gone up since then but not that much.

FWIW: I bought a 64-1 SA/DA a few months ago, and paid $525.00 in Western Massachusetts. IMHO, they are not seen all that often in my area, so my motto is "buy 'em when I see 'em". Good luck with your decision.

I had one for sale and it took forever to get rid of. Not an investment in my book. If you want a DAO for a shooter buy it, otherwise pass.

I would pass, they aren’t selling hot on GB right now, I’ve been watching a lot of 64s go in the 3-400 range

Thanks for the info. I guess the the LEO and PPC shooter in me gave it too much cool factor, plus never held one. But the action is so nice. Not super smooth or light, just locks up quick. I'll try not to handle it day after tomorrow.

I have the twin to it and enjoy shooting it. Bought it private party for four hundred, and today would pay more to have one.

Around here at last 250 too high. DAO very hard to get rid of.

I had one that I purchased probably 5-6 years ago for $200. At that price it was an amazing deal and it turned out to have the best DA trigger! I mistakenly sold it to fund a 3” 64. I wish I had it back and occasionally look for them but I’m personally not willing to pay $500 for one. If I found one for $350 I’d pounce!

A call to S&W revealed the DAO M64's product code was 102508, (NY 1). Can't explain the early production date by serial #, but good enough for me. The owner wanted a shotgun of mine that has just been sitting in the safe so we were both happy. The shotgun found a new owner who overhead us talking so we walked out together, he with my old shotgun and me with the DAO M64.

Well then, a NY-1, congrats. Must be an early one. My 4” is a -4, I think. I’m going to check.

You might want to get it lettered.

JMHO YMMV.

Well done. Over the years I’ve had all 3 barrel length NY-1 64s. I don’t know if it’s me or the guns but they were all great shooters. Enjoy and have fun!

Trying to gain more knowledge of these variants. Is it safe to assume my 64-3 would be a production over run since it has no NY-1 or exposed serial # markings?

With its early serial number, perhaps it was a demo or trial?

Congrats. That price would be fair around here these days. Even better since your trade gun was a safe queen.

Forum member BigBoku knows just about all there is to know about these guns.

Maybe he’ll see this thread or you can send him a PM.

Might try adding NY-1 to the title, that may draw his eye.

Serial # 7D was produced 1981. Model 64 NY-1’s authorized in 1987.
