Don't laugh. Please see the attached pictures to see if this is used or new. I bought this two months ago.

The stocks pictured aren't S&W factory. What else did you want to know?

Google S&W 686 Plus Talo 3-5-7 edition. SKU: 150853.
You'll see the correct grips.
No picture of gun, so I can't comment on it.

At least the stocks aren’t labeled “The Grip Zone”

Altamont has been having some quality control issues lately. They have been selling these grips on Gunbroker as blems/seconds. I'm assuming the latest batch of them was poorly made.
Those never should have left the S&W factory.

According to this, they sure do look like factory stocks.

The grips can be replaced. Maybe even calling Altamont for a replacement may be in order.
But how's the rest of the gun?

A 686+ is a great gun, but all I see from your post is a little dirt on the grips. Have you tried cleaning them?

It was like that the first day from the store. I tried cleaning it. The stuff does not come off. The rest of the gun is good though.
I am thinking of replacing the grip with a laser grip so I don't have to see the eyesore.

Hardly a scam if you saw the degraded condition when you bought it. That's called buyer beware.
S&W might stand behind it under warranty, but IMHO it's good riddance. Those are horrible stocks to shoot full magnums with. Took mine that were like your's off after one cylinder, and put new Hogue Bantams on.

Looks like the finish/stain wasn't applied too well; it wouldn't bother me, but I may be too easy.

Are you sure the brown isn’t from the vapor barrier paper the gun comes wrapped in from the factory. Vibration during shipping could have caused this.

While the grips leave a lot to be desired they are to easily replaced with something much better both in a practical way or aesthetically. So if the gun suited me I would go for it and place a grip order. Might try to haggle the price a little but that's all.

The grips are laminated so you never know what you're going to get.

Same grips, what's your point?

I have seen those grips on factory fresh 686’s on the shelf . Usually with the bateleur moniker on the label.

Those grips came on the 686+ TALO series, had one of the 7" models.
Absolutely the worst grips ever manufactured. Just replace with better grips.

They are grips. Grips are replaceable. I have the same grips on a 3" Talo version of that gun. I replaced them the day I bought the gun. Something under $30 and the gun is much easier to shoot.

The Hogue Bantum grips work well for me on snubby 686-4.They offer a solid non slip hold while shooting it.
You can try to get the 3-5-7 grips replaced but what you receive could be the same or worse.

I’d be thrilled if a new S&W only had crummy grip finish. I can replace those easily. I’m not saying it’s right. I’m saying it’s not as bad as it often is.

I'd be more concerned about nicks, dings, damaged screws, or blemishes on the actual gun. Imperfect stocks are annoying but not necessarily indicative of a used gun.

You forgot:
#1 When S&W is in denial and returns it unfixed and tells owner that nothing is wrong.
#2 Over torqued barrel
#3 Excessive cylinder to Barrel Gap

I own a new 686 plus talo 3-5-7 and those are the grips that came with mine.

I wouldn’t consider the gun used due to the wear on the grips. My guess is the grips at the factory were at the bottom of a tub of grips, sliding around, until installed.
