Default Yoke movement?

So I was cleaning my new to me M&P340 last night and I noticed when with the gun's cylinder open,if I push on the cylinder it'll move just the slightest bit forward, then it'll move back into place.

If I do it with the cylinder closed I can feel it move again ever so slightly. It does this while closed and it feels like it's being pulled Back into place. I've tried it pointing the gun straight up and down it does it as well. I checked the yoke screw and it is tightened all the way. The gun shoots fine and all the chambers line up with the barrel and there is no play from side to side with the trigger pulled all the way back. No lead shaving or anything either.

So is this normal for my gun? Should I get another yoke screw assembly from S&W Wesson and install it and see if this changes anything at all? There's no visible gap between the frame and yoke with the cylinder open when I push the cylinder forward, just a very slight audioable and tactile click when I do this but again no visible gap is produced between the frame and yoke when I do this. Thanks for any help with this guy's.

Absolutely, positively no issue there. Load, shoot and repeat as necessary. Yoke is fine, Gun is fine.

The yoke itself should not move forwards or backwards at all, only swing freely when you open or close it. The cylinder, however, will have a very small amount of forward-backward movement (called end shake) when open or closed, but less when closed as the lock pin should slightly spring-load the movement. When you open the gun, look at the point where the yoke pivot enters the frame, and see if there is any movement other than rotation. What you describe sounds normal.

When open, the yoke can have a little front to back play, due to the spring loaded yoke retention screw. Still, not a problem. Everything sounds normal for that gun.

Its normal on the new style Smiths with the spring loaded plastic tip in the yoke screw.

The plastic tip "floats" a bit. Not like how the old hand fit yoke screw would seat and not allow any fore and aft movement.

Nothing to really worry about, as long as you dont have endshake you are good to go

That said, if yor cylinder floats so far it drags on the forcing cone when you are closing the cylinder, then that is a problem

Thanks everyone for the replies. So the very tiny bit on forward and backward movement that my gun's yoke has while open is indeed normal then?,due to the newer type of crane retention screw assembly Smith uses?

This is good to know this, because I was wondering before I posted here if I should call S&W and maybe order a new yoke screw assembly and install it and see if it changed anything. Good to know I don't need to do that. I've had some older J frames that didn't do what my M&P340 does. But thanks to you guys I now understand that my gun uses a different type of yoke assembly screw.tgsnks again everyone for the helpful information.

Check the crane screw once in a while. Sometimes they can work loose. If that happens, the crane can come off on the ground during a reload. Just make sure it stays tight, and everything is good. The spring loaded plastic tip is actually a steel tip.
