Default Collector value for blued (by S&W) 686-3?

I have a S&W 686-3, 6 inch barrel, that I purchased new several years ago (I think in the 1980s). It is blued, and came from S&W that way. I think it was a special run, and I was told that it was made for the Highway Patrol in some state (maybe Kansas, as that is where I purchased it when I was living there).

Does this gun have any collector value? It is in good condition, but I have other 357s that I shoot more. As I get older (75), I think it's time to thin the herd down a bit.

Thanks,

Bob H.

Welcome to the forum.

Interesting. Is this a stainless revolver with a blue finish? If it's a bona fide 686 it should be silver. The blued guns of similar style are model 586. A pic of the model number inside the yoke should tell the tale. Those who know more should be along presently.

Ah ha! My SCSW says that a "midnight blue stainless" was produced. Product code 104208. 2,876 made. $445 in 1989.

Yes, officially named "Midnight Black". Probably an early attempt at Melonite or a similar process; it is not very durable, so perhaps the current process is better or a different stainless alloy is used for pistol slides and the like.

The 4" is less common than the 6" black 686.

O.P. - I'm interested to see what the blued 686 looks like. Can you post a pic?
