686-4 with a wheel on front sight
Whats the wheel on the front sight ramp with the 4 screws mean? Is that for shooting at set distances? Or are the 4 elevations just reference points? Not for sale at the moment just trying to learn something new. I live in johnstown pa area.

I think that version was called the “Silhouette Model” but it was also popular among some participants in the PPC game. My long time shooting partner campaigned one for several years back in the ‘80s and ‘90s and the adjustable front sight was quite effective for him.

You can adjust the front sight for four different distances. I’m sure a google search will turn up the instructions. Froggie is correct about the intended use.

There are 4 orientations the little wheel clicks to. Each has a tiny screw you can use to adjust elevation.

It means you have found a limited run 686 made from 1986-1995. Your gun was made in Dec-1994, by the Julian date code on the box. There were a few different models made with this sight, but it was initially introduced on the model 29 Silhouette which had a 10 5/8" barrel for the Metallic Silhouette Shooting game. Its use has been described above.

Handgun Silhouette shooting was popular in PA in those years with matches all across the state. If that was what the original purchaser's intended use it was most likely for IHMSA Field Pistol or NRA Hunter Pistol competition as the 6" barrel is a little short for 200 yard rams.

Another possible use is to zero the revolver at a fixed distance with four different weight projectiles. Or .38 Spl vs .357. Or any combination thereof.
They work well and can be fine tuned on the fly with some experience, even though the set screws have no clicks. I've been using them for ages for IHMSA good success. What can make you a bit crazy is many S&W rear sights do a "roller coaster" elevation dance when you change windage!
BTW, it's helpful to set the furthest (#4) setting first when using at 200m. Almost, but not quite, bottom out the front sight with your favorite load, then zero elevation using the rear sight. Work in closer in reverse order using the front sight screws. I.e., #3 for 150m, #2 for 100m and #1 for 50m (or yards depending on your particular range or preferred units of measurement.) My BB S&W 29 uses pretty much all of the elevation travel available using my slowish swaged bullet load. Takes down 55lb. steel Rams well, though!
