Best J frame grips for CCW 340
I have a 340 in 357 mag. I bought it after selling my 640 and knowing I needed a J frame 357 back in my stable.
I shot my 640 about 50/50 38 & 357. I generally carried 38 +p or 357 mag. This was 15 yrs ago. I shot a 340 at the time and really thought it was great…..with 357’s. I had the rubber uncle mikes boot grips at the time.
In my old age, I feel like I will want the most recoil reduction I can get from the grips. I haven’t shot it yet. That will happen after some warranty repair.
So, should I get some Pachmyrs or what else is recommended?

I stick with the OEM boot grip knock-offs or the original UM boots. I've found nothing works better and I should know, I have four 340s. Recoil is bad with anything.

Pistol grips, especially for a very small gun, are an immensely personal thing. What fits my hand well may fit your hand poorly. You may have to try 2 or 3 before you hit the sweet spot. I know I did.

If you're trying to dampen felt recoil, and still maintain concealment, give Pachmayr Compac a try.

Barami's work best for me, but for a different reason. They give me many options for concealment and ease of use. A gun has to be right there now. It also has to be hidden. Clip grips do those things for me.
There are better grips for target shooting but this ain't a target gun. It's a SHTF gun.

I use the Hogue Batam grips on all of my scandium framed snubs. They are super light and functional. Lighter than the UM boot grips.

I would be embarrassed to admit how many J frame grips I have bought over the years to try and tame the recoil of .357. My final solution was to go to the very concealable Hogue extreme series G10 and stick to .38+P.

I put Hogue Tamer on my 340. Makes a huge difference on recoil.

The Compacs recommended by 629shooter work well for reducing felt recoil. Another good option is the Uncle Mike's Combat's (shown in pic). A lot of the grips I see recommended are nice grips but will do nothing to reduce felt recoil. In fact, a couple of them may do just the opposite. I preferr the Uncle Mike's because in addition to mitigating felt recoil they give a very good grip without increasing the outline when concealed.

I’m thinking I might try these depending on how I like the factory grips.

The Ergo Delta grips are amazing. I have them on all my round butt Js, including the 640P EDC.
I shot the J snubs with Pachy Compacs for years, but once I shot a friend's 442 with the Ergos I went straight home, ordered multiple sets from Midway and had them all swapped out 3 days later.
They are a hand filling grip that make the Js both comfortable and manageable with heavy loads. Since the additional material is between the back of the trigger guard and the grip frame, similar to the old school Tyler grip adapters, they don't detract from concealability. Mine works great from a Desantis pocket holster.
After 5 or 6 cylinders I became accustomed to the grip angle. Rounds on target group about the same but I took almost 2 seconds off a 5 shot string.

Highly recommend the Pachmayr Compac. They wrap completely around the grip and are hand filling. They may not look as svelte as other grips, but if you want recoil reduction, these are the best grips out there; IMHO!
I have a set that I purchased 2 J frames ago. If my arthritic hands get worse in the future and I go back to a J frame, these grips will go on it. I’ve sold my last two j frames but kept these grips just in case.

In similar threads people complained about the looks of the Delta grips. My reply was that I don't expect people to be looking in my pocket at my 642 and if I have to draw it the last thing anyone is going to look at is the grips.
The only downside is that the grips make it a bit harder to draw from my Mika pocket holster. I've never asked if he makes a version cut out for them, so I don't know if it exists.

I have a M&P340 now that is my EDC. I got it used and it came with the crimson Trace LG-405 laser grips, which have the little pocket in back that really helps recoil even with 357 magnum ammo. They don't make it a pleasant shooter for shooting a lot of magnum rounds. However they do make it much more tolerable too practice with to me anyway. They also make the newer LG-350 ones that also have rubber on the back and front for recoil reduction, they can be had with red or green laser.
For non laser equiped grips the pachmayr compac grips work great too. So do the hoghe tamer grips, although they are narrower and slightly longer than the pachmayr compac grips. I e pocket carries with both of these grips if that's a concern for how you may want to carry your 340.
The CT 405 grips are the ones pictured on my gun to give you an idea. Hope this helps.

Crimson Trace lasers. My 649-2 has them and they dampen the kick quite nicely.

I'll echo what Robert said.
My favorite for a Centennial, after trying many, is Karl Nill's J-frame grip specifically for Centennial revolvers. Like the Hogue Centennial "Tamer," the grip goes to the top of the back strap. Most fall at least a half inch short of the full back strap (like the Altamonts on the Lady Smith in the center position in the first photo).
Spend a little money, keep trying till you find the grips that work for you.

Hogue Tamers on my 60-15, CT 405 on my 637. They do the job for .357 in the 60-15, and +P's in both.

The OEM Grips are best for carry but, they hurt me now that my hands are 70 years old. I use Hogue Tamers and Pachmayr Compacts so I can practice without pain. When I buy pants I just make sure they fit my off hand pocket. There is always a J-Frame in my off hand pocket. Here are Two of a few.

What is going to be more handfilling than the s&w grips without going to covered blackstrap or 3 finger grip. I’m really probably just looking for wider rubber grips. Are the Hogue’s wider?

Yes they are. Mine are the Hogue 60000 and they wrap around. Thicker with the increased finger size/reach on the front and the backstrap covered, wider on the sides for the palm, and fit my hands well. I think Pachmayr has an open back model.

I picked this Desantis Clip Grip up a year or so ago. It is shaped along the lines of a Spegel boot grip, but has the waist band clip like a Barami. I wrapped it with a layer of Brooks Tactical Agrip. After trying quite a few J frame grip options over the years, this one is here to stay.

That's what you gotta do, try different ones, I did too.
For AIWB carry I'm using the Compac Professional right now as they're the best compromise for grip & concealability for me.
The Compac Presentations give you the most to hang onto, which is great for full loads at the range, but a little more than I want IWB or pocket.

I have carried off and on a 340 for a very long time. The best grips for concealment and recoil reduction I have found, at Crimson Trace LG405's.
The little air pocket covers the backstrap and the grips are very thin allowing me to carry and draw from a variety of pants. The laser lets me fire from a variety of positions with a great deal of accuracy. I am a believer.

Ditto on the CT grips. Aside from the laser, the padded backstrap is awesome.

I put a set of Herritts Shooting Ace wood grips on my 442 Pro Series that cover the backstrap. Along w/an old Tyler grip adapter it’s a perfect fit for my XLG hands and worked great at the range today. Ran a man sized Q target out to 25 yards and scored five for five hits high center chest over & over. What you need is something to cover the backstrap w/o compromising concealment too much.

Hogue on my 442-1
I have Hogues on my .38 Special 442-1. I like them because I can still pocket carry. Also, I can shoot a box of ammo and not have to quit for the day because my hand is numb. Put them on my.357 Ruger SP101 too. Same reason.

So far I've tried Hogue wood bantams, Altamont Falconia and, of course, the factory boot grips on my 642's. I like shooting with the Hogues the best, but they're wide at the butt and don't carry quite as well in my pocket as the factory grips. So, with that, the 642 I carry every day has the factory grips on it. Does anyone know a wood grip with a nearly identical profile to the factory rubber boots?

These Crimson Trace grips fit me PERFECTLY and may be a little ugly, but I will never buy any other J frame grip.
Also.......the laser is a huge help in bad light.

Something you can get all your fingers on. I use older Sile combat grips on my two 640's.

I was lucky enough to find an almost-new pair of Uncle Mike's combat grips for my little 442. Great for control, little recoil and still pocket-carries just fine.

The new Pachmyr Diamond Plate grips are my go to on hard kicking revolvers. Have a set on my Ruger SP101 and my 686 Pro.

Have several diff ones on my Js.
Just like already posted, you need to try several to find the ones for you.
I also like the Pach Compacts.

As you can see, grips are subjective to each user. Surprisingly, I have different ones on each of my J frames. The only one that has a set that covers the backstrap is my 640. I rarely shoot magnums through it as my SP101 is better in that role. Just get a set that feels as good as it shoots

Well, I’m really happy with the Hogue Bantum rubber grips and the VZ320’S with finger grooves. I think I’m just going to have a carry off! Shooting them, they were different, but both very comfortable. Having a hard time deciding.

I like the bantams on my bug. Draws nice with the unorthodox way I carry that thing

The VZ’s really are too uncomfortable with training volume of ammo.
The Hogue replacements are good and I guess the winner to me.

I had some nice looking wooden grips but they hurt my hand (advancing years and arthritis), I tried some other wooden grips but wound up with the OEM rubber ones.

I have said it before, I will say it again!
The Old School "Uncle Mikes Rubber Boot Grips"
Best out there for a solid utilitarian edc grip.

Craig Spegel's checkered Boot grips are my first choice J to N frame. The Uncle Mikes are licenced copies in rubber..
Second favorite is the wood Hogue Bantam.
I've got one J-frame .357 a 3" 60-10 micro 5 shot 686....
My lightest is a 337PD at 11oz.
IMO .357 out of a 1 7/8" barrel is a waste ..... I'm not a believer in the one shot stop and carry .38+P hollow points with the intent to go for a fast double tap.
That said I do load the 60-10 with 158gr .357 soft points ....... for emergencies.

I currently run Bantams on my .38 Special Js. all steel frames. I've fired up to Hydra Shok 147 +P+ through them with those grips. While they're small and don't cover the backstrap, the rubber material has enough absorption to mitigate harsher recoil better than other boot-style grips, including the Uncle Mikes.
The only .357 J I had was a Model 60 2 inch years ago and didn't care for shooting magnums thru it with anything but Pachmeyer compacts, which don't do anything for concealability - the reason most of us have J-frames. But recoil is subjective, as are grips. Some of the other Hogue offerings might be a good compromise between concealability and taming recoil. Its not uncommon for someone to have a box full of revolver grips next to their box of holsters...
