Well, believe it or not those ugly black grips feel great in my hand, but they ugly.
And yes the Culina combats feel great also. These will be my 3rd set.

Your new Culinas look incredible, but all of John's work does. Can't wait to see them on the gun.

Nice Culina stocks. What wood species are they. I am in the process of ordering a set for a blued 19-2 and trying to decide what wood I want. I own 3 sets already

I sent the wood to them, its Koa, and the billet I sent to them was a stunning piece.
I know alot of people like the walnuts and maples and ebonys but to me koa is, or can be about the prettiest wood Ive ever seen. It has to be seen in person though to be fully experienced. The depth and layers just cant be captured by any lense. Ive seen pics of some online that I fell in love with but when I saw them in person, well, I had to go to the bathroom to clean myself up. Yes, I am a wood junkie.
Anyone here ever send your own wood in to them to have them turn it into a set of grips?

Where did you find this wood in Hawaii (retail store, Internet website)? I will be going in January. Was it a special cut or block of wood that is necessary for use in making grips? Thanks

Yes, we send Koa to the Culinas.
My wife found this piece of Koa on Kauai and sent it to Jennifer Culina to make stocks for this 5” 27-2. Koa is my favorite wood.

I remember seeing my first piece of Koa wood in 1987 and I fell in love with that wood that day. I am a wood aficionado, big time. My wife thinks I nuts the way I react to a pretty piece of wood.
Koa is a special wood, it only grows in the hawiian Islands if Im not mistaken. The shimmer and chatoyancy of much of it is overwhelming. I favor the darker, brownish pieces over the pinkish red ones. The gold and brown shimmer is just flat out sexy looking. While this piece, the one I sent for the stocks, is much lighter than I prefer it was a really pretty piece. I have a much much better piece at home but it is just a little, and I mean just a little for the Culinas to use in their machine that makes the grips. It might be the prettiest piece of Koa I have ever seen in person. Super dark brown/gold/black, just gorgeous. Super tight curl too. I used it to make the grips for my 627.
And these panels for my DW VALOR
The panels are tru oil and the stocks are my oil finish. You can see what a difference the type of finish makes.
I still have anough of this beautiful piece left to make either 2 more sets of revolver grips or about a dozen sets of 1911 type grips. I also already cut out a set of L frame grips from it. Some day Ill finish the inletting and shape them out and mount them. I get very nervous messing with that piece of wood, if I ruin any of it it would just break my heart.
Ill post up some pics of the new ones maybe this evening. The cylinder, which I sent out to have the throats honed, will, or should be in the mailbox when I get home today.
