S&W 629-2 - Stainless Steel or Nickel-Plated?
I have an S&W 629-2 that I am about to put up for sale if I can figure out what it is made of. It has a bright shiny, mirror surface that looks to me like nickel, but The Blue Book of Gun Values indicates that all 629s are stainless steel.
Can you help?

S&W 629-2 - Stainless Steel or Nickel-Plated?
Thanks for the replies.
So, as I waited for your replies, a couple other questions has come up. First, though the gun is stainless, on the yoke, the model is listed as 29-2, NOT 629-2. Did S&W leave off the 6 on the yoke?
Second, I have a presentation box with this 629. The gun fits perfectly. However, Blue Book does not mention a presentation box with the 629, except for the 100 pre-production revolvers manufactured in 1978. The serial number of the gun I have does not fall within serial number range of the pre-production guns.
Third, the gun I have has recessed chambers. Blue Book does not mention recessed chambers for the 629, except for the 100 pre-production revolvers manufactured in 1978.
I is any of this peculiar?

S&W 629-2 - Stainless Steel or Nickel-Plated?
One more point. Blue Book says the 629 had 6 inch barrel. Mine has a 6 1/2 inch barrel, measured back to the front of the cylinder.

If the frame is marked 29-2, what makes you think it’s a 629-2?
It sounds to me like you have a 29-2 with a nickel finish. Are the trigger and hammer colors case hardened?
Post some photos.

S&W 629-2 - Stainless Steel or Nickel-Plated?
Thought it was 629 because we first thought it was stainless steel.
Trigger and hammer are case hardened.
Photos attached.

These were hard to get back then and probably didn’t sit in the vault too long. I’d guess it shipped in 1974-75.

The N135 serial number dates to 1973. But like Chad posted it could have shipped later.

That looks like a Model 29-2 with the nickel plated finish. Very nice, should bring a good price.
