Hi Guys
This grip is on a 27-3
The grips above the base are not perfect but as you see the base is very rough
Any suggestions how to refresh them?

Refinish or refresh?

For the latter, try paste wax.

Lightly sand only the bottom, to remove a bit more of the old finish and even out the color, then apply Teak oil or Tung oil, which will penetrate the wood. The oil will repel moisture, but it isn't truly waterproof. There may still be some mottling of the finish where the oil doesn't penetrate the old finish.

For a more waterproof finish, do the light sand and use spar urethane (polyurethane) . It will dry to a hard finish similar to the rest of the stocks, but may not match the color exactly (neither will the oil finish). Careful not to overlap the edges or you'll have a "ring" at the bottom of the grip sides, and don't get any inside the grip halves.

I'd do a full strip and refinish. It won't hurt the value one iota and they will look like new again.

+1 on a complete strip and refinish. Regular old furniture stripper works great...brush on and wait. Wipe off, quickly rinse and dry, lightly buff with sandpaper (not the checkering, use a toothbrush). I prefer a satin finish on my stocks as compared to the factory glossy finish, but that's just me. Formby's or Gun Stock finish are easy to apply and turn out great. It's an easy and fun DIY project. Good luck.

Over the years I've refreshed/restored many stocks.
Carefully pointing up the checkering really makes them pop.
Brownells has the single line tools for this job.
