S&W Model 60 (no dash), wood grips? YOM?
See photo. I cannot find anything that says the S&W Model 60, .38 Special, 2-inch barrel ever came with such wood grips. Blue Book indicate only 5-inch .356 Mag came with them.
Can anyone confirm?
Also, any idea YOM for serial number 93921?

Can't see the photo.
Are you giving us the number from the yoke or the bottom of the butt?
Sounds like an assembly number from the yoke.
The serial number is most likely on the bottom of the butt.

No visible photo, and the “serial number” needs an extra digit, or one to three letters, or both. May be the assembly number.

Yes, thank you.
The R-series serial numbers began in 1969 and ran through 1983, the last known s/n being R332516.
Based on other shipping dates near yours in the database, I'd suggest S&W likely shipped yours in September or October 1981.
The smooth banana grips might have been original to your Model 60 or more likely they were an aftermarket add on.
The most common factory grips of the era were magnas without the diamond around the screw escutcheon.

Yes, factory stocks but not to my recollection ever put on a factory standard production gun.

Bob,
Thanks for the info. You said the grips might have been original. This gun is in new condition. There are no mars or blemishes on the metal or wood. There is not a trace of carbon on in or on any cylinder, the muzzle, or the barrel. The cylinder lock ring is very, very light, almost not visible. Does this add any to your opinion on the grips?

No, nothing at all.
As Alan mentioned, those were probably S&W factory grips. Many S&W dealers around the country offered them for sale as an after-the-sale add on.
The most likely way they would have been original to your Model 60 would have been as a special order. The only way to know that would be to order a history letter and hope they were documented as having shipped on the gun.

I believe the round butt target/presentation grips were sold by S&W dealers in "blister packs." Many people bought the grips along with the guns. I had a friend that worked at a law enforcement distributor who said that the store had a barrel full of magna grips that officers took off in the store when they bought a gun and a set of target (or Pachmayr) grips. He said he wished he had that barrel full of grips today.

Good afternoon,
I don't know if this will be helpful or not, but I have a R series model 60 no dash. It came to me with magna grips that were numbered to the gun. Same serial number on both.
