Is there no love for the 625 45acp?
I never see any discussion about the 625 45 acp. It’s always the 625 LC or a model 25. Both are great guns but those of us that have a 625 chambered in 45 acp need to express our love for this gun.
This is my second 625-2 and is the one I’m keeping. Like many foolish thing that I’ve done in my younger days I parted with my 4” 625-2 that I used in USPSA for several years and later regretted it. At least in my area you rarely see a 625 or for that mater any revolver in 45 acp so acquiring another took twenty years but it was worth it.
When I was young and shooting USPSA a good friend shot mostly revolvers and his 5” 625 45acp was his primary choice. Actually the only thing that might tempt me to trade is a 5” 625 45 acp.
Do you love your 625 in 45 acp?
I still have the original grips but like the cushioned blackstrap. It’s much easier on arthritic hands a wrists.

I have a later JM model. Love it. Wish I had gotten on the wagon a few engineering mods earlier.

I bought both my 625’s used but this one is particularly smooth and stages perfectly. I don’t know if there’s been any work on it but wouldn’t be surprised.
I’ve been curious about the JM version but never shot one.

About 2009 I blundered into a fairly decent gun shop. In one of their cases they had a 625-6 (IIRC) and a 625-2. The price was identical for either one ... $600 OTD. I took the 625-2 and never looked back. It is one of the most accurate handguns I've ever owned. Sincerely. bruce.

I have a 625-6. I really like the gun. Unfortunately, it has been a disappointment in terms of accuracy. I have run about every kind of store bought round with a reputation for accuracy, and about ever recipe of hand load that shoots great in my other .45 ACPs through it from a bench rest with a good scope at 25 yards. The best group that it has ever shot was with Federal Gold Medal Match 185 gr Semi Wadcutter. Ten groups of five averaged 2.03 inches. Everything else runs from 2.5 to 3.42 inches. If you average all the tests of all the ammo that I have done, it is a 2.75 inch at 25 yard gun. Frankly this is the only Smith that I own that shoots this bad.
I have measured and checked out everything on the gun that I can. The cylinder throats are all right on the money. The gap is good. No bulge in the barrel from crush fitting that I can find. Cylinders all line up tight and dead nuts.
I suspect either the forcing cone or the barrel crown. Cone looks a little rough inside and crown looks good, but not perfect. There is not much of a crown there to begin with from the factory. What there is has a very tiny ding in one area. You really have to look to see it, but if you do, it is there.
I have a guy lined up to do the cone and crown. We will see then. In the mean time, like I said, I really like the gun. It is more than good enough for minute of beer can at the range and such. We have a lot of fun shooting that and my 25-2 (which is an inch and a half gun at 25 yards - no two cylinder throats the same size - go figure)

Plenty of love for my 5” 625-2 and 3” 625-3. I regret selling my 4”. Also love my 625-6 MG .45 Colt

I have plenty of love for this 625-2 Model of 1988. It's been customized to my tastes and treated to a fine action job by Nelson Ford. It has the best double action pull of all my revolvers and is extremely accurate. What's not to love?

One of our members sold me his 5-inch 625. It’s a heavy gun, and it gets heavier as I get older. I enjoy shooting it. I can’t tell much difference in accuracy, if any, between shooting it with clips or without. The previous owner took it to Nelson Ford for some minor improvements, which made it a very nice gun. It’s been a pleasure to own. I should shoot it more often. I would guess it’s a bit more accurate than any of the 25-2s I’ve owned, and considerably more accurate than a couple of them. I need one in 4-inch.

Those are Magnus 170 g LSWC. simply because they shoot best in my 1911. I don’t think the 625-8 cares what I put in it.

It may have something to do with the rifling, though I don't know that for sure, but my 625-6 5" is noticeably more accurate with a hard cast bullet than a soft one. This is contrary to all I've come to know about cast bullets in revolvers.
Accuracy is certainly acceptable with a soft bullet. Since I cast the same bullet (a SAECO copy of the H&G #68) for other .45 ACP revolvers and Colt 1911s, I'm not going to change to a hard bullet for one gun.

I'm a huge fan of 45acp revolvers. I have a five. Two are around 65 years old and two are 104 years old. I bought a 625-2 (Model of 1988) a few years ago on a whim because the price and condition made it very attractive. Even though it was a little out of my collecting wheelhouse, it has become one of my favorites. During the ammo madness, I shot a lot of 45gap out of it because it was available and cheap by comparison to 45 acp. The higher pressure made me leary about shooting it out of my older guns. The 625 is accurate and balances very well with its 5" barrel. For me, a great all around revolver.

Shot my 625 in zsa and uspsa combat matches many times. I have a clever Moonclip Server Belt Loader that I use. Instead of a row of magnetic pins and having to reach to a different location for each reload it has a spring loaded slide on a rail that moves the clips right or left so that you reach to the same place on your belt for each reload. Great idea. I added a thin piece of hard thin plastic between each clip to make it smoother to use. The 625 is the most accurate revolver I’ve ever owned.

Had one when I was younger and more broke. Traded it in on whatever gun of the day I was interested in at the time. My regret list from that era is pretty long.

I don't love my 625 JM but I shoot it occasionally. It pulls bullets and locks up the cylinder. I fixed that with bullets made for a roll crimp and a roll crimp die. I can load lots of 45 ACP for my 1911 using a taper crimp but they don't always work in my 625.
Truth be known a 44 special works better because it's a revolver cartridge. 45 ACP was designed for the 1911. The ballistics, psi and bullet weight are about the same.
I'm not selling my 625 though. I like to shoot it and I don't own a 44 Spl. If I had it to do over I would have a 24.
625 is gone from the S&W lineup. Sailed off into the sunset like many other very nice models due to lack of interest.

They're great! Mine is a 625-8, and I use Buffalo Bore 255 grain LFN Auto Rim standard pressure for 45 Colt power in a more efficient carry package. I keep a couple of full moon clips loaded with Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman +P 255 grain 45 ACP in my pocket for the same point of aim.

I love my 5 inch Model of 1988. Great trigger, very accurate, shoots 240 hydra shok +P like a mini-mag and drops piggys dead. Great revolver. Black target Millett rear, gold bead front. Way fun to blast away with.

Looks like I’m going to have to pull mine out of the safe and shoot it this week.
I’ve not noticed any load that works better than any other. It seems to like everything I put in it. I generally shoot 200 gr lead but have shot 185’s and 175’s and Berrys plated in different weights too with great results.
A few years ago I had a Colt 1917 with government markings and it too shot everything I put in it with good results.

Happen to have a 625–6 Mountain Gun in 45 ACP. Extremely accurate, especially with 200 grain. Nice set of S&W Morado wood combat grips. Sorry not smart with pictures at all.

ACP revolvers? Heck, I have a bunch of them! Stainless, as in Model 625? I have exactly one, a S&W Model 625-6 Mountain Gun. I bought it to back up a blued ACP revolver I built.

This model is on my short list of guns I would like to own. They are expensive, but I plan to have one at some point. Really appreciate the narratives on them. Seems like a great revolver.

In about 1998-99 I bought a used 5" 625 Series of 1989. I'm thinking around $250. I also halve a 1917 Brazilian Contract, I bought for $125 in the early 1980's. I have about 250 full moon clips and keep both guns fed a diet of 200 gr LRNFP's over 5.5 of WW231. Never shot anything with only two legs, but lots of 4-legged things have passed away after an encounter!

I have several 625’s and am always on the lookout for more. One of my favorite shooters.

The .45 ACP round and revolvers are a match made in heaven. You can't beat moon clips for fast reloads and not having to chase brass.

I have a great 4" 625-3, and just snagged a 3" 625-3. Back in the day when we could only carry revolvers in uniform, I would have killed for a 4" 625 as a duty gun.

The blued revolver in post 33 was built specifically for duty carry.

Bought my 625-3 new and it is my favorite although I do not shoot much. Kept the original grips and did buy a Kramer FBI type holster that makes a nice package -- not for concealed of course. Made my own 185 grain Hornaday semi wadcutters w/Bullseye -- now I am wondering why I am here and not out at the FOP wasting a few of them.

The 4" JM has converted me to 4'' revolvers. Other than that it's just another new S&W that most people don't like because of MIM, cast parts and the trigger lock. S&W discontinued the model because of declining sales.
I might be selling mine in the not too distant future now that I have an early model 28. The JM's and PC models didn't hold their value very well 15 years after the initial offering. Still worth about what they were new or maybe a little less. The earlier 625 models have increased in value.

My Custom Apex Tactical Inc. S&W 625 JM .45 ACP is my pride and joy!!! I would not sell it for $5000. It is my bedside gun. Since I live in a seniors' apartment complex my first rounds are:
Corbon Glaser Silver .45 ACP +P
Bullet Wt.: 145gr Glaser Safety Slug Silver, Velocity: 1350fps, Energy: 587ftlbs, Test Barrel Length: 5.0 Inches ; followed by Federal 230 grain HST +P HPs, Muzzle Velocity 950 fps, Muzzle Energy 461 ft. lbs, barrel length not stated.
I LOVE my Custom Apex Tactical Inc. S&W 625 JM .45 ACP!
