Smith 686 no dash 2.5" barrel value
Hi guys, new to the forum and wanted to see if anybody has any info on this 686 I just inherited. Its a no dash with a 2.5 barrel. From what I can tell, it was made in the early 80s and it has the Lew Horton grips on it. Can anybody tell me if this thing is rare? I do not have a box, just the gun. SN ALV0453
Any idea how much it is worth or what year it was made?
Thanks for any and all info!!
Belonged to my dad so wont be for sale

Welcome to the Forum.
You have a very nice S&W from you Dad.
I wouldn't consider the 686 2 1/2" rare but it is a very desirable sought after S&W.
Enjoy it!

Welcome to the forum. If by inherited you mean you lost your father you have my condolences.
These M686s are desirable but certainly not rare and $4800 to me is outrageous but what do I know.
They did have a factory recall for a defective bushing and you might still be able to send it back to S&W for the repair.
The ALV serial prefix comes from 1985.
I'm glad to see you will not be selling it. I have my Father's M19 and it's not going anywhere.
I'll let some other guys tell you what it's worth.

It's worth $1,000 with those stocks.

That gun in NE Ohio would be marked at 13-1600

I too have a no dash 686 I inherited when my dad passed though a 4" with the box and all papers, even his receipt from when he bought it in 1981. Our fathers had great taste in revolvers!
I would say that the bottom is as toroflow1 advised and up to $1200. Enjoy, the 2.5" is every bit as accurate as the 4" comparing the two I've owned. Yours should be from 1984-1985, the -1 came out in 1986. The first version for Lew Horton came out in '84.
I've had good luck getting the year of manufacture from S&W on different handguns when just calling customer service, couldn't hurt to try.

Out here in the west, anything under $1300 is a good deal; $1000 or less is a great deal.

I just bought an 80s vintage 686 no dash 4" barrel hardly fired for $1,100 at a local gun show. Gun is in near mint condition.
