Default 586 ND Advice Needed

I was at a gun show this afternoon and saw a 6” 586.

Box was for a 586 but serial number didn’t match, but the bigger issue is pretty widespread freckling, albeit it generally tiny freckles. More widespread on one side.

Nice, dark target grips on it.

Ask was $873, I offered $625. Guy said he couldn’t go lower than $750.

I know I can clean it up with my oil and bronze wool program, and I think it’ll look good, but there is no way to completely reverse the freckling and there will be some light spots in the blue.

Given the price and info above, is $750 reasonable? Sorry I fubared and didn’t take photos.

I would use the gun to kill a whitetail this year, and though I have plenty of 357s, none have the 6” + barrel required for hunting in my state (MD.)

It seems to me that the asking price, and even the counter, are a bit optimistic. However, if this is the gun you want, and to hunt with rather than a "collectible" then it's only money. I have two 586's, one in 4" and one in 6". I wouldn't trade my first-borne for either one. In fact, she will get them both for her very own at some point.

Looking back at my post, I realize my logic is less than great - but you get the point. The 586 is a magnificent gun and may be worth more than most would pay.

I always try to hold out for the highest condition I can find, subject to the state of the gun fund of course. I've passed on some guns that maybe I shouldn't have but everything I've bought I've kept and have no interest in parting with due largely to their high condition. So this strategy is working out for me but man it takes nerves of steel sometimes to pass on something you think you "need" but is otherwise less than pristine.

Condition is everything. If there is freckling and not in original box, it's shooter grade and that puts it around 700 for the guy at the end of the rainbow. I don't think you were off the mark at 625.

I think it depends on what State you live in and how often these models roll by.
In my non free state,I paid $850 for a slightly used nd 6 inch 586. Wood grips and no rust or box.
That box can be sold on fleabay for $50 easy or more.
Target grips are worth $75 to $156
So sometimes ya have to bite fast.
Just make sure the mechanicals are sound. Cash in the face of seller helps since it is a handicapped item (freckles)
