Default 296 L frame

I dug this one out of the back of my safe recently. Almost forgot it was back there. It’s a 296 44 special centennial scandium/titanium five shot cylinder. I think I shot it once when I first got it. If I remember correctly, the model was only made for a short time. It weighs 18.6 ounces on my scale. I don’t ever see myself using it so I put it up for sale but not much interest because I don’t think most people know what it is. What would be a fair asking price? Where should I sell it to attract buyers?

I don't have a 296, but I do have it's sibling, a 242, a 7 shot .38 special version.

I only saw one on Gunbroker with a starting bid of $1295 or buy now $1495. Think your piece is relatively rare. Nice revolver.

Default 296.

I have one sitting in my safe too. I keep an eye on the gun broker bids, usually go anywhere from $850 on the low end to about $1250 on the high end. They don’t come up for sale all that often.

I used to pine for a 242, but you rarely see them, and they're pretty expensive. And, I'm not buying any more guns. I'm not buying any more guns. I'm not buying any more guns.

I paid $575 for this one but that was six years ago. Don't see them for sale very often but they are not bad guns to carry given the light weight and surprisingly good trigger. I wouldn't part for this one now for less than $1000, if I were selling, which I'm not. Good luck.

I think I paid around $1000+\- a few years ago. Traded it to a buddy before I shot it. Ugly but pretty scarce. $1250 to $1350 would be a good place to start if you have the complete package.

I have a Model 396NG, which is a .44 Spl L-Frame, but in black and without the hump-shroud of the hammer. I've had mine Mag-na-ported and it is a favorite of mine.

I can't remember if that was one of mine I sold? I decided I wanted one, so I bid on 2 at the same time and won them both several years back (I'm thinking under $600 each). I decided to let the one with case and accessories go. I kept the one without accessories. Fun gun, and it starts with a .4! With the right ammo, it's a serious round.

Found this one used, so no box, etc. It is definitely light with a very nice trigger. I have shot some 240 gr hardcast keith swc that technically were loaded beyond 44 special pressures but not near what the 69s can handle. It has a thin forcing cone with no blast shield on the topstrap over it like the magnum scandium frames have, so probably best to not push it too much It is very light, so there was a little discomfort at that level but still tolerable for a cylinder or two. I load 180 xtp that are probably around 850fps that are quite tolerable comparatively speaking. A very unique revolver that simply did not sell well initially. It does carry well.

I don't know any production numbers but I've seen less 396NGs than any of the other 296x/396x variations.

A little heavier with it's steel cylinder but not bad. Mine weights in at 24oz.

They tend to be reported as having tight throats (.428") like all the 296/396/696s usually do. Mine was no exception but I reamed them out.

All fun revolvers.

I thought it had an exposed hammer like a 638. Never mind.

In my travels and Gunsmithing I have not come across this .44 special that I can remember. Nice caliber and it's a Smith a great combo for CCW if one asked me being retired Law Enforcement also. In this day and time I would really recommend that you not sell this revolver and you'll see what I mean if you think about it.

I had a 296 that I sold to a friend and I wanted to buy it back. Unfortunately, He sold it. You shouldn't have any problem selling it. I haven't seen one pop up in this area in a long time. Good luck with the sale.
