I just purchased a used Model 65-6 with a serial-number of CCU29XX. How does one date this? Is there a catalog of manufacture out there somewhere? Same goes for my 696-NoDash, CBW05XX?

Hi you're Model 65-6 was probly made in Late 1998 therebouts or so and you're 696 .44 Special was introduced in Dec 96 with the serial CBS2XXX so yours would be probly Mid to Late 1997 therebouts a call to S&W probly would'nt hurt they may be able to help you on the precise date of manufacture if this helps.Yes there is a Catalog called the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson put out by Jim Supica And Richard Nahas and there available on either E-bay,Amazon,Abe Books Etc...Its got all the info you want to know about the Smith's guns worth the investment you wont be disappointed ....

I certainly thank you for the information. It was most helpful. I gotta say that I like both of these revolvers. I have seven in my little cache and these two certainly add to it.

If you have the box for either of these guns, you should be able to identify a date code on the end label. My 696-ND, for example, has the date code 6361, which means the 361st day of 1996. Mine is numbered CBR62xx, so it came off the line a little before yours did. You might have a number like 7090, which would translate to late March of 1997. The date code for your 65, if it's a 1998 gun, would begin with an 8.
Hall County! A couple of my remoter great grandparents, Seaborn Loveless and Nancy Hale, were married there in 1833. Their son and his family survived the burning of Atlanta. I hope to visit the area some day.

No sir, I did not get the box with either revolver. That is why I am seeking info on the dates of manufacture. They are in such good condition that they must have both been "safe queens". Thanks for your info.
Yessir, Hall County is steeped in history. It is named after one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Hope y'all do get back to visit your historic early family area.
