I recently bought a 38 Special, J frame cylinder off Gunbroker. I received the package today, and when I inspected the contents I found that there were inserts in the chambers to shorten the length. A 38 Special cartridge wouldn't fully seat. They came out easily and there was no damage underneath, but there was a lot of powder residue. The inserts are .250 in. long. My only guess as to the purpose is that some previous owner was using shortened cases to compensate for the short ejection stroke, but that would work in full length chambers. Does anyone have another idea what these inserts are for?

Possibly insert for Simunitions training. They used these to insure no live 38 spl ammo could be mistakenly loaded.
