10-8 4" Heavy Barrel with a Round Butt. Common as fleas on a dog or "different" at least. I have several Mod 10-8s all have SQ butts. This Smith also is parkerized, has a smooth trigger face and a target hammer ??? The action is custom shop + smooth. Are the RBs common on the 4" Heavy barrel ? Any help very much appreciated.--Tom

Well, ****. Just traded it for a nice 4" Mod 19-3 with half as much character. Would have loved some comment but I did not give the forum enough time. Still would appreciate some info. Thanks, Tom

I have a 4" 10HB with a Square Butt. I don't recall ever seeing a 4" 10HB with a Round Butt. I have seen several 3" Round Butts but no 4" Round Butt 10HB.

I have a Blue 10-8 with the 4 inch heavy barrel and round butt. It was NIB when I bought it last year. The gun is 1981 vintage and it came with checkered target round butt "banana" style grips. The end label on the original box is marked with "TR" in the Stocks area and I assume this means "target-round".

Yes - it has a very smooth action. I don't know about value over the more common styles. I paid $395 for mine NIB. I felt this was quite a bit for a model 10, but I really liked this configuration. Hope this helps

I believe that it was about the time of the 10-8 that Smith decided to turn all Frames into Round Butt configuration. It is simple enough to add a set of Round to Square Butt Stocks to a gun but I've never seen it done the other way around.

Personally, I think this change was one of their better ideas and is actually something of a 'Step Back in Time' for the Company since the Round Butt existed for many Years and the Square Butt was something of a Special Order rather than the norm. This is well shown in the "Regulation Police" Models where the 'Regulation' part was simply a Round Butt gun with a set of Stocks that made it into a Square Butt.

According to The Standard Catalog of Smith And Wesson, the square butt was discontinued in 1995-1996 which would have been the Model 10-10. I suppose a factory letter from Mr Jinks would be the only way to tell if a Model 10-8 with a round butt was common or rare. I do really like the "banana" style target grips on a round butt. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Mike and scha. As far as a "shooter supreme", I think I let one go. It was that good.--Tom
