I've grown up with the idea the factories never make a revolver exactly to my tastes, close, but not exactly. So, over the years, I dreamed up some little changes to make a gun more nearly perfect in my eyes.
Such was the case with my Smith & Wesson Model 625. Didn't really want a stainless steel gun, but the M1955 Target was long gone. So, bought this silvery-looking thing. First off, round butt, which I solved with some home-made conversion grips. Well, after I'd finished my .45 ACP/.45 AR escapade, began to brew up something in my mind.
I'd been experimenting earlier with the .45 S & W cartridge ( I refuse to refer to it as the .45 Schofield) and had had some interesting results using the 230gr. Hornady flat point bullet. This in my Model 25 in .45 Colt.
So, I did like the heavy 5" full lug barrel. My idea was to find an old Model 629, just to keep it stainless, have the .44 cylinder re-chambered to take the .45 S & W round, and fit the 5" full lug barrel to the 629's frame. Thus I would end up with a square butt stainless .45 S & W revolver with a 5" full lug barrel, that would take .45 Colt speed loaders. And, the shorter .45 S & W case extracted more positively than the longer .45 Colt round.
Well, as I said, it never came to fruition, but I had an interesting time experimenting.

That is an interesting concept. I would like to see you build and test some loads in it!

I think you'll find the .45 S&W an interesting round to work with. Most likely your brass will be Starline, which are premium quality. I'd look at maximum 45 acp loads and go from there. With cast bullets, Trailboss would probably work well. Don't try to equal 44 magnum loads, even in a rechambered M629, but a 250 gr. JHP @ 1100 fps should be obtainable. I have one of the new M25 Classics(should be called a M26) in 45 Colt with a 6.5" barrel, blue finish, and of course, will shoot both the 45 Colt and 45 S&W. I haven't had a chance to shoot it much yet, but plan to soon. I have both calibers of brass to work with.Bob

Several years ago, I weighed .44 Special and .45 S&W cases empty and filled with water. Their water capacity (a measure of internal volume) was within one grain of each other so one would think that .44 Special data would be a good guide.

Groo here
Try some 45 auto rim in your 625..
Very close to a 45S&W with a better case and
rim...
