I am new to the forums. I used S&W revolvers through the 80's for duty, and pleasure.

Went to the dark side (auto) for about 20 yrs, and just came back to the fold.

My first returning experience was not the warm and fuzzy I had remembered for S&W.

I have a new SSR that has 50 rounds out of it, and is going back to the factory for a trigger repair. Single action cocking is not functioning properly.

The question on the forum is whether I should consider some Performance Center work while the gun is there.

I am considering having a red fibre optic front sight installed because of old man eyes, and the ball detent lock up.

Is the ball detent lock up that much of an improvement.

What other services should I consider? Any pictures, or threads I can look at the show the work available from the Performance Center.

Thanks,

Curly

Thank you PPC,

Unless they charge an arm and a leg, I will have it done.

Follow up:

I just spoke to the Performance Center, and they confirmed they cannot do the ball detent on the SSR. Something about a V notch preventing it from being done.

I inquired about additional services, and he suggested that when the gun was in for the warranty work to request a call from the Performance Center tech to review what is available for that specific model.

Any suggestions on Performance Center work that would be for an 686 SSR?

Curly, I own 2 SSRs and several PC guns and other then getting it moon clipped I don't see a lot of difference in these guns. The sight can be changed by you and I do recommend a fiber optic front sight for I too am old and they really help a lot. But the SSR has that quick change ability.

Thank you Revolver King,

In reading posts on the forum here and elswhere, the quick change does not appear to be so.

I don't have the punches to take out the roll pin, and am leary about drilling for a new one.

Am I missing some thing?

I had hoped to put the Cylinder & Slide Extreme duty rear sight on it with the fibre optic front from SDM being installed by the Performance Center.

I am not interested in competitive shooting at this point, so I would pass on the moon clips.

Quality control question for you on your SSR's. I have an uneven gap at the top of the crane where it meets the frame. Is this considered acceptable?

Also, where the barrel forcing cone goes through the front of the frame, there are small secondary ridges just below the top strap on each side.

I don't remember them on older models. Is this something new? I have not looked at other L frames, and did not notice it until I was home. Have not been to the dealer since.

Thanks,
Curly

You do not have to remove the pin to change the sight. Just push the sight to the rear (it is spring loaded) and lift out the sight from the front. SDM sells a replacement for it. And I believe the other Items you mentioned are normal.

Thanks for the sight change info.

I could not figure how they called it a quick change. No directions in the owners manual that came with the gun.

Any thoughts on the SDM vs. Cylinder & Slides front sights.
