So while visiting the high desert of California I saw a couple of SW models for sale at a Jernigans. A 6" 686 is listed at $699 and a 6" 629 is listed at $829. I was expecting some outrageous pricing but this is in line with what I see in VA. Of course, one still has to deal with the silly gun laws out here but the prices are in line.

I'm always bitching about California laws, but I recently saw a 6" 686 polished like nickle for $550. There's a 629 4", not P&R out here now for less than the one you saw. It ain't all bad if you're in the right place at the right time. I was at Joshua Tree last week. Where were you at?

I saw these in Yucca Valley. Heck, I was amazed to see a gun store at all let alone one selling handguns.

Man, those prices are high for ones in my area. Maybe by Cali standards they are not out of line, but would sit for years around here.

That's typical around here in the Bay Area. There is a gun shortage and the stocks are pretty thin.

Devildog, I didn't look for that gun shop in Yucca Valley this time. But I went there on my last trip. There's gotta be only one. If you're driving towards Joshua Tree from Yucca Valley, would it be on your left? Last time I was there I wanted to get some 44-40's for my Colt (nickled commemorative). He had one box for $75! New stuff, too. Other than that prices seemed just fine. I didn't go in this time 'cause what's the point? If I bought another gun I'd have see if they had a divorce lawyer in town. Desert flowers looked pretty though, huh?

I got back into S&W recently after owning a few in the 90's. This is what I've paid lately, all of these purchased this year in the Bay area.
From private parties listed on Calguns:
686-2 4" with rubbers no box: $600.00
19-4 6" with original targets, box and PW: $575.00
From local dealers on consignment:
66-2 2 1/2" with original magnas, no box: $550.00
49-2 with original magnas, box & PW: $450.00
I guess it's obvious I'm a big 357/38 fan. All of the guns above have been fired but very little (which is fine with me because they're no fun unless one can shoot them occasionally - IMHO) and were in great shape cosmetically as well. The blued guns have no discernable wear from holstering etc.
I thought I did reasonably well given the fact there are more and more Smiths leaving this state thru internet sales all the time. Right now the big craze seems to be the 1911 style pistols and ARs of course so there are still a few decent deals left if one looks.

Seems like the tight economy has loosened up the old Smith gun supply in CA. Between Sacramento & San Jose I'd guess there are about 20 gun stores I regularly visit and I'm seeing 19s, 27s, 29s, 586s, 629s and a few C & R Smiths floating around. Just saw an older 610 with combat grips that sat for a while at $600.00.
Of course there are still the folks selling and looking for the big payout.

i think about $450 is a minimum ive seen for about anything youd actually want to own. goes up from there. It takes a lot of shopping and showing your face in the same store, eventually they will get to know you. also in PRK we are dealing with an impending auto loader problem in a few years (microstamping) so new autos will probably not really be available as i am not aware of any manufacturer that can comply and i would posit that quality used/private party autos (colt, sig, glock etc) will command a big premium. then when revos are the only thing you can get, prices will go higher yet

These were on the south side of 62 at Yellow mart (Jernigans). There is a small shop on the north side of the highway and I've never been in that store. Bear's Guns looks to be closed. By the by, the gun prices I quoted were for NIB guns. And yes, the desert flowers look amazing this time of year. It is amazing the difference that the fire made. Even saw a golden eagle today.
