barndog;
Have you seen these?

http://www.crimsontrace.com/Ho...bid/233/Default.aspx

I have these on my 642 and you note that they cover the back strap and extend below the frame. I have rather large hands and these are my choice for pocket carry. I don't find the extra length to be a hindrance for me in pocket carry (with a Mika holster) and yet they give me the control I need.

Thanks Dale I have seen those grips in the box at a gun shop. The grips that are on my gun now are the ones I would like to keep they are a bit larger than those Crimson Trace grips, I have seen sights that you can add just above the grip but I can't seem to find them now. thanks again

I am just curious, why are laser sights on small j frames so sought after? The j frame is a belly gun meant for up close and personal encounters. If you ever were in a situation where you needed to use it the time it would take to turn the laser on would be too long, and if you leave it on all the time it'll usually end up accidently coming on in your pocket or in the holster and wearing the battery down. I've always thought using the 200+ bucks it would cost on the laser and buying some good ammo would be a better investment. but, to each their own.....just my .02 cents.

Mine does not come on accidently. I like the red dot especially for close shots.

Rightwinger, just how much do you practice the point shoot method? I practice that method regularly, but still find the red dot a benefit.

but, to each his own... just my .02 cents.

RightWinger;
Maybe you might want to try the Laser sights. My Crimson Trace grips are triggered by a button on the front of the grip when I naturally grip the gun. I can shoot fast WITH PRECISION, with the Laser Grip. I have some serious vision problems but I can see the laser in dim light EXTREMELY well. Most troubling encounters take place in dim light. I can also point shoot when necessary.

Best of both worlds...

The "J" frame may be a "belly" gun but I can do pretty dern good work out at 25 yards with one. Work with them a bit and they will surprise you.

My 3" Chiefs Special target (with adjustable sights) has allowed me to shoot many targets at 25 yards (NRA Bullseye Timed Fire target) in the nineties. It is an excellent trail gun and has a rather wide range of abilities.

I have Crimson Trace grips on my t-series Browning Hi Power, and my S&W 637 and 686+ revolvers. I would not buy a handgun for which Crimson Trace did not provide a laser grip. That is how sold I am. My needs are HD/SD only. Decades ago, I was a bullseye shooter, enthusiastic more than good. For that, especially at outdoor ranges, red laser sights would not be very useful. Today at my indoor range, the guy two booths to my right had a handgun with a green laser sight. Don't know what it was because he left before I did, but it was absolutely brilliant even against the chopped tire bullet stop twenty-five yards away. By comparison, my red laser sight was barely visible against that black material -- but at ten yards it was just fine. I love to make a black hole appear where a red dot had been.

Although that green laser was much more visible than my Crimson Trace red laser sights, I think the latter is the more useful. The shooter of the green laser clearly had to turn it on and off manually, because that green dot went everywhere -- rather distracting (as was his flinch!).

Laser sights come into their own in SD/HD situations. There, they really shine. (Sorry, couldn't resist that)

Cordially, Jack

Well, ya'll have pointed out a few scenarios that I agree a laser would be helpful in. I wasn't trying to put anyone down who uses a laser, I guess at the time I could not understand why, thats all. I do own a laser, however right now it goes onto the rail of my Glock 19, and this is because with the silencer on the gun I can't see my sights. and Dale, if you're getting decent groups at 25 yards with your 3 inch chief's special, you obviously do practice quite a bit and I commend you for that!

RightWinger;
If I can't get to the range, twice or three times a week I tend to get a bit "cranky". I am retired, so time isn't quite a barrier as it used to be (I still wonder how I had time to work).

I have been on a trip for most of a week and am getting a bit "bored" with no range time. At home, I am either casting bullets, reloading or going to the range (in between my photography, etc).

Dale, I use to work at a gun range and teach classes, it was nice once the range closed having the whole thing to myself for as long as I needed, however now I'm a police officer and even though we have allotted times we can shoot you'll rarely be able to with the difference in shifts, court time, church...and just trying to find time with the wife. I am grateful I live out in the country and can shoot in my backyard if weather permits, but there is still that thing called time.....and that I have very little of these days!

I have LG-105's on my M&P340. Every little piece of advantage I can gain is worth it.

I finally found a pair if the larger LG-305 grips, and bought them from a forum member. I had the LG-405s, and they were too small for these mitts of mine. I am hoping that the LG-305s will be a better fit. They will be riding on a 640-1.

I will come back to this thread with a report on how they work for me. (Nickname in high school was "Paws"! )

They do make for a faster aquisition out past 20'. I would think the low light scenario would make it advantageous to have these on a snubbie.

I put a set of lasergrips on my Kimber .45, they work great. But they really didn't seem to make a huge difference in aimed firing, when I had the gun at eye level. Probably because I've shot 1911's a lot.
I also put a set on my wifes Ladysmith snubbie. These have helped her show a HUGE improvement! The laser dot makes dry firing so much more productive for her and her groups have shrunk because of it. It's also been a big confidence builder for her.

akjaeger;
You make an excellent point. The lasers are one of the best "learning tools" ever to hit the market.

A friend had me dry fire his snubbie (642) in his basement to comment on the trigger. After two or three times double action pointing at an object across the room, he said, "Oh, I see you have done this before". It immediately shows up whether, or not, your double action technique is "up to par".

A good set of snap caps, and ten or fifteen minutes a day dry firing with a laser will give you almost immediate improvement. It will also encourage you to maintain that skill.

Of course, use ALL safe procedures when dry firing...

+2 on what Dale said. I have these also on my 360PD and they really tame the full magnums and are pleasant with 38+P's. I liked them so much I added some 401's to my SW1911Sc.

Hope this helps - TS
