What fixed sight K frames came with the 2.5 inch barrel? Was it just the Model 10 or other models as well? How common was the 2.5" barrel compared to the 3"? Please post pics of your 2.5" fixed sight K frame. I really like these revolvers. I didn't know they existed until I saw a K frame pic thread.

Hey there is a rare model 19 with 2.5" fixed sights. The model 10 had a 2" barrel with fixed sights along with the model 12 those are the only ones I know of.

In SCSW there is pictured a 2 1/2" barreled model 10. Some were made for special police orders.

Good try, but the 65 was only available in 3" and 4", not 2 1/2". BTW, don't forget the venerable 2" model 15!

Please do a little more basic research before making posts like this. The 2.5-inch M-66 was a staple in the catalog for many years. I've seen a number of them, and some have been pictured on this very board.
It is the three-inch M-66's that are rare, but some were made in special runs.
Were you maybe replying to an above post about M-65's, and hit the wrong key? That would make sense.

The only 2.5" Kframe with fixed sights that I am aware of is a M10, and they are not that common. 2.5" M19 & M66 were regular production items for years, but they have adjustable sights. 2" M10 & M64's are fairly common, and 3" M10, M13, & M65's are also quite common.

Here is a model 10 with a 2.5" barrel. From the Michigan State Police.
S&W model 19, w/2.5" barrel, and fixed sights (well kind-a). Has Cylinder & Slide Extreme fixed rear sight.

Texas Star,
You are correct. It was a brain fart. I was indeed referring to the above post about 65s. I meant to say 65 and hit the wrong key. Sorry! The post is now corrected.

The standard issue FBI revolver in the time period after the 4 inch Model 10 and before the 3 inch Model 13 was the 2 1/2 heavy barrel Model 10, just like the MSP one pictured above. I'd love to find one.

My brother was an FBI agent from about 1975 to 2000. He was issued a M10 2.5" revolver identical to the MSP revolver pictured above. I understand 750 were manufactured; 500 went to the FBI and 250 to the MSP.
Like many LEOs, my brother was a pretty good shot, but not interested in guns per se. When he went to Quantico I made him promise to call me when he was issued his firearm. He called me and I made him read all the markings and measure the barrel. When he finished telling me that he had a S&W model 10 with 2.5" barrel, I said "Impossible. Smith doesn't make that gun." He laughed and said "Well, I'm holding it in my hand." It was issued with a Pachmayr medium sized grip adapter and the factory wooden stocks. He was issued a Bucheimer thumbreak beltslide holster and 2x2 ammo pouch.
I was young and hard headed and I was contemptuous of the FBI M10 at first. I thought they should have given him a 4" Model 19 or 66 with .357 ammo. He was issued the now familiar .38 +P 158 g. LHP from WW and Remington.
Over the years I grew to appreciate his M10 and would love to have it or a copy today. He hung on to his revolver as long as he could until the late '90s when he was forced to turn it in and transition to the Sig P228 9mm. He asked if he could buy the M10 but the bureau said No Way. I imagine it was smelted.

That really irritates me! It's not just that it's wasteful of a fine gun and of my tax dollars, but also it's a shame from a sentimental standpoint. Your brother served our country for a quarter century. That gun was his constant companion and if he wants to buy it at a fair price when the Bureau is done with it, he should be able to. He might have wanted to pass it on to a family member someday.

I remember seeing these 2.5" M 10's for sale in Gun List many years ago. It was a like a 1/4 page ad with a picture of the gun, don't know where they came from, I think they are 10-7's. Longer ejection stroke cleared 38 Spl. completely. I recall Smith recently offered 2.5" 637, 638 and 642 with shrouded rods, I never saw one in person, but I saw a 637 on Gunsamerica once, so they existed. Don't see them anymore, perhaps they didn't sell well, but that would be ideal in my book!

Yeah, like his little brother!
The Bureau is extremely regimented and image-conscious- - Hoover's legacy, I suppose. They probably didn't want to take the chance that a firearm they issued would end up being used in a crime one day.
My brother didn't like semi-autos. He said there were one or two guys in his large, metropolitan field office who hung on to their revolvers long after they were ordered to transition to the semi-auto. Finally, one day the Bureau ran a computer search, found the holdouts, called them on the carpet and ordered them to report to Firearms to be trained up on the Sig.
They had a great female agent whom everyone liked and respected; by all accounts she was an outstanding agent. She was authorized to carry some kind of small semi-auto as a backup. One Saturday she was in her apartment, cleaning her firearms, and she shot herself in the abdomen with the back up gun. She called her squad at the FBI office and reported what had happened. They got EMS mobilized and had a dispatcher talking to her on the phone, giving first aid instructions. Her fellow agents and EMS rushed to her apartment building but didn't have the apartment number. She had become unresponsive by then and couldn't tell them. The agents went to every door in the building, forcing entry if no one answered or refused to open the door. Finally, they found her but she had bled out.
That reinforced my brother's distrust of semi-autos. I tried to argue that it appeared she violated basic gun handling rules, but he was hard headed about it.

Of course it was. That's what the Federal government does. Man that irritates me. I own a British contract Colt OP in 38-200 that was taken off of a felon who was on Federal Parole. I thought for sure it would go to the Feds who would destroy it after the case was adjudicated. However it stayed with my department so after many years it was finally sold to a licensed dealer who in turn sold it to me. That was pure luck. Shame about your brother's M10.

My retired FBI buddy, a former Supervisory Special Agent, carried a 3" Model 13 as his duty weapon. He told me that when he retired in 2001/2002, he was offered the option of purchasing his weapon. He said the agency wanted too much $ for it, so he let it go. Don't know what that $ was.

The Bureau ended the practice of allowing agents to buy their issued revolver upon retirement during the first Clinton administration. I remember that day well - there was wailing and gnashing of teeth at an epic scale. A couple of guys made the mistake of reporting their guns stolen and were quickly made examples of.
By that time I had gotten my 220 put on my POW list, along with my Model 36, known colloquially in the Bu as a "five shot". I turned in my issued 226 and haven't had a Bureau issued handgun since. No one has noticed. My Sig keeps getting grandfathered in, and I reach my Bureau expiration date in June, so it looks like we will make it to retirement together.
If I remember right the cost to a retiring agent for a Model 10 was 120 bucks.

"Bureau expiration date" - that is funny!
Congratulations on making it this far, and thank you for your service. May you enjoy retirement with plenty of guns, ammo, targets and relaxation!

I've told this story numerous times. About 6-7 years ago while visiting a gunshop in Hopewell Junction NY that I frequented often, I came upon 3, yes THREE 3 inch FBI 13-2's, or at least the shop owner claimed they were.
I had no funds at the time so walked out empty handed. I posted here on the forum what I found and offered up the source of the guns. Only one forum member, Chuck Odom aka 29-1, got in touch with me and I gave him all the particulars.
He went to the shop as he lived an hour away, got the serial numbers, called Roy Jinx, and quickly scoffed up all 3. All of them turned out to be FBI guns, and they were turned in to the shop by the same guy.
Chuck's wife is active FBI, and also a forum member, btw.
If I recall they were all $325-350

I was banging my head against a wall for awhile after Chuck posted pics on the forum , and showed the factory letters for all 3.
In retrospect I should have bought one, but didn't want to break up the package.
They went to a good home so I'm happy with that.

I always liked the look of a fixed sighted 2 1/2 inch barreled k frame size gun. Other than the few model 10s, there was t anything else produced by S&W, that's why I had to settle on a 2 1/2 inch Taurus 65.

I'd look for a 2.75" Ruger speed or service "Six" series to fit the fixed sight bill or move to a 3" with a 65 or 13.

Brad-
Is that really your Bureau "Expiration date" or a "best by" date? I think that here on the board, we'll see it as the latter.
Clinton was the most successful and determined anti-gun President so far. I'm not surprised that he ended the practice of allowing retiring Feds to buy their issued weapons.
As for 2.5-inch barrels, I think the only fixed-sighted M-19's were those for the national police in Peru. I think uniformed personnel got four-inchers and detectives had the snubs. Both had fixed sights. Personally, I prefer stainless guns and three-inch barrels over 2.5's.
I vaguely recall reading that the RCMP got some of those 2.5-inch M-10's. Anyone know for sure? Any Mounties on the board now?

I have a friend who retired from the FBI.He told me Janet Reno stopped the partice of letting agents buy their duty guns. He was very unhappy that he could not buy his model 10.

MI State Police requested S&W make a run of 2.5" m10s in the late 70s-early 80s. MSP wanted only 280, S&W needed a larger order. FBI agreed to take 500, so a run of approximately 780 was made.
I have two of the MSP 2.5s, which were issued to its Detective Bureau, mostly in its Fire Marshal unit. They're very quick and well balanced.
