I have a 686-4 and was wondering if I could upgrade the 6 shot cylinder to a 7 shot cylinder? I would have a gunsmith do it but just wondering if it could be done and where I would find the cylinder?

Yes, it can be done by any competent gunsmith. You could try the auction boards to find a seven shot cylinder, or buy one from Brownells/Midway, or S&W. Regards 18DAI.

Do you have to have any different internal parts, such as a different hand?

I would get the cylinder and a new hand and have the smith to set both cylinders up so you can switch them out. I have four 686's that I can swap out the cylinders to each other. That way I can pick the barrel I want to use.

Not to hijack the thread, but what about going the other way: swapping out a 7-shot cylinder for a 6-shot cylinder. Same answer?
Bullseye: do your four "swappables" include both 6 and 7 shot cylinders?

i've been thinking of doing the same thing with a 586 since i can't find a 587-7 or maybe just taking a 520 and replacing the nasty titanium cylinder.

Actually I set mine up that way. I started with the 7 shot and bought a parts kit on either gunbroker or auctionarms. The kit was everything but the frame as it was a crook gun the police cut up to destroy. The shop was in Palm Springs and I believe I paid around 80 bucks. For that I got a 6 shot cylinder, all the internals including another hammer and trigger and an extra barrel. I switch back and forth as I really prefer Safariland loaders instead of HKS as that is what I used for most of my patrol time. Sorry I dont remember the name of the shop but I will try to remember.
