I was pondering on getting a S&W M650 .22 magnum J frame. I see there were some made with an extra .22LR cylinder. Is it possible/safe to fire a .22LR from a revolver equiped with a .22MAG cylinder?

The .22Mags are slightly larger in diameter, you may blow some casings.

Thanks, I guess that explains the need for 2 cylinders. I was hoping it would be like a .38SPL in a .357MAG.

You can safely shoot .22 WRF in a .22 mag.

I have the Mod 650 with the LR cylinder. It has the same part# as the Mod 63 cylinder and still available. Buy the gun and go for the cylinder, you will be very pleased!

A 22LR round fired in a 22Mag chamber can, and will, split the brass casing and launch stinging bits of gas and debris through every existing gap and space no matter how tiny. Don't ask how I know this to be an absolute fact....

+1 on ohiobuckeye"s answer. The previous owner of my Model 48 did that while we were at the range and he split all the casings. Then I realized it was a .22 mag not .22lr. Accuracy was terrible too with the long rifles.

You can get a set of chamber inserts from Ace Dube that convert the .22 Magnum to the .22 LR. They work fine.
