Default Scarring on S&W airweight Need Help!

Can anyone tell me what this scarring is? also what caused it? is it just cosmetic? I have no idea what it's from. I noticed it after taking it out of my gun safe, so I'm sure it's related to that. There is also almost no humidity where I live..

Some common bore solvents can damage this coating. It is NOT an anodized finish; it's basically paint. Anything with ammonia in it is especially damaging. I think S&W still recommends cleaning with Break Free CLP only. If that's what you've been using exclusively, then it appears your revolver has been bitten by a zombie. I think you know what to do.

Seriously, though. Contact S&W. It could be the finish wasn't cured properly. I doubt they will refinish it for free, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

It is called "Filiform corrosion" from its resemblance to worm tracks. It often occurs to Aluminum which is coated by an impermeable coating that excludes Oxygen. It is quite commonly found under the paint on aircraft painted with polyurethane enamels. The only way to stop it for sure is to strip the finish and etch the surface with a liquid etchant as is used when refinishing aircraft. It can then be glass beaded and re-finished with "Ceracoat" or one of the other baked on finishes.

S&W may refinish or replace the gun under warrantee, even though they state clearly cosmetics are not covered by the "Lifetime Warrantee". Call them, not E-mail, and ask. 800-331-0852. Worst they can do is say no!
